Microstrip patch antennas feed to optical waveguides in an electro-optic (EO) modulator are proposed for millimeter-wave radar system. Reflected millimeter-wave radar signals can be received by the microstrip patch antennas and converted directly to lighwave signals through EO modulation. The lightwave signals can be distributed using low loss optical fibers. Millimeter-wave loss and distortion are almost negligible. Device analysis and experiment for 40GHz millimeter-wave bands are discussed.

Millimeter-wave LiNbO3 optical modulators stacked to orthogonal-gap-embedded patch-antennas on low-k dielectric substrate is proposed for fiber-wireless (Fi-Wi) links. Direct conversion from wireless millimeter-wave to lightwave signals can be achieved using the proposed device. It can be operated with no external power supply. Experimentally demonstration of Fi-Wi link for 40GHz millimeter-wave bands using the proposed device is reported and discussed. Carrier-to-noise ratio of ~30dB can be obtained in the Fi-Wi link.

We propose z-cut LiNbO3 optical modulators using patch-antennas with orthogonal-gaps for millimeter-wave radar applications. They are fabricated on thin LiNbO3 crystals bonded with low-k dielectric materials. Large modulation efficiency and low noise response are obtainable.

We propose electro-optic modulators suspended to patch-antennas embedded with a narrow-gap on low-k dielectric materials. The analysis and experimental results of the proposed devices for 60GHz bands are presented with measured modulation efficiency of ~50dB.

A novel guided-wave electrooptic single-sideband modulator, or optical frequency shifter by using the periodically domain-inverted structure with a spatial shift is proposed. The analysis and the design of the device are presented.
