A Foucault's pendulum design

H.R. Salva; Rubén E. Benavides; Julio C. Perez; Diego J. Cuscueta

In this article we explain our design and their performance, of a Foucault pendulum capable of continuous operation with a following system of the oscillation plane. We have built two pendulums, one of 2.835 m length and other of 4.975 m length. The oscillation amplitudes in either case were 1.8 and 1 deg, respectively. In our latitude the precession speed (9.89 deg/h counterclockwise) can be measured within 0.5 and 0.2 deg/h. The arrangement detected some earthquakes of medium intensity that took place as far as 765 km.

Abstract Internal friction and shear modulus measurements were carried out in a Ti32Zr18Ni50 alloy to study the effect of martensitic transformation on hydrogenation properties. The temperatures of martensitic transformation and austenitic transformation weredetermined. The results were compared to those obtained by electrical resistivity and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. The experiments showed two peaks of internal friction, one associated withdislocation relaxations and the other with phase transformations. The microstructurecharacterisation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The phase (Ti, Zr)2Ni was found mainly precipitated in grain boundaries. Some experiments were carried out in specimens with previous plastic strain and another set of samples was tested in a hydrogen atmosphere. With increasing plastic strain, the amplitude of the peak associated with dislocations decreased. Hydrogen addition during the testsled to an increase in the temperature of maximum internal friction.

Note: A 1-m Foucault pendulum rolling on a ball

H.R. Salva; Rubén E. Benavides; J. A. Venturino; Diego J. Cuscueta; A. A. Ghilarducci

We have built a short Foucault pendulum of 1-m length. The aim of this work was to increase the sensitivity to elliptical trajectories from other longer pendula. The design was a semi-rigid pendulum that rolls over a small ball. The measurements of the movements (azimuth and elliptical trajectory) were done by an optical method. The resulting pendulum works in a medium satisfactory way due to problems of the correct choice of the mass of the bob together with the diameter of the supporting ball. It is also important to keep the rolling surface very clean.

S.E. Urreta; H.R. Salva; A.A. Ghilarducci; Orlando V. Billoni; L.M. Fabietti

Abstract The dynamic Young modulus (E) of magnetic Nd2Fe14B+αFe nanocomposites is investigated with mechanical spectroscopy techniques (vibrating reed configuration, f≈1.5xa0kHz e ∼10 6 K/min ) and magneto-mechanical effects. Even when porosity is identified as the principal cause of modulus reduction, magnetic effects are also detected.

Abstract In previous works (Jornadas SAM 2000; J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 226–230 (2001) 988) the low-frequency anelastic effects of two manganite perovskites of La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 and La 2/3 Ca 1/3 MnO 3 were studied at 1xa0Hz and temperatures above those of the metal–insulator transition. An important internal friction peak (P1) appears at 414 and 419xa0K, respectively, with a modulus variation and no appreciable contribution to electrical resistivity. Another compound Pr 1/2 Ca 1/2 MnO 3 of the same family has been studied by anelastic mechanical spectroscopy in order to add new data which could elucidate the (P1) peak mechanism. The measurements were made in a sub-resonant forced pendulum (0.1–20xa0Hz) and in a vibrating reed equipment (kHz range). A stable (P1) peak has been detected at 410xa0K (1xa0Hz), with a corresponding modulus step. The appearance of this relaxation peak in the Pr 1/2 Ca 1/2 MnO 3 compound, and its high activation energy value, similar to the other compounds measured, indicates that the microscopic origin of this relaxation does not correspond to an oxygen jump (characteristic activation energy≅0.8–0.9xa0eV).
