Fractionation of heavy metals in surface sediments of Taihu Lake, East China

The BCR (European Communities Bureau of Reference) three-step sequential extraction procedure was applied to fractionate heavy metals in the sediment of Taihu Lake. For the determination of total metal concentration of the sediments, sample digestion was achieved by using HF/H2O2/HNO3(2/1/1) acid mixture in a microwave-irradiated closed vessel system. The concentrations of Cd, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu and Pb in various extracts solutions were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results obtained from the BCR three-step sequential extraction indicated relatively high mobility of Zn, Cu, Pb and Ni in the sediments while Cd and Cr were poorly mobile. Enrichment of heavy metals was found in the sediments collected in the northern parts of Taihu Lake. In the sediments collected in the southern and western sides of the Lake, heavy metal concentrations were relatively low. The relationship between total organic carbon (TOC) and heavy metals concentrations in the sediments is discussed.

The transportation, time-dependent distribution of heavy metals in paddy crops

Sixteen experimenmtal plots (5 m x 6 m = 30 m2) were designed with four different levels of heavy metals (HMs) concentration in soil. The concentrations of heavy metals in soils, and paddy plant during the different periods of growth were investigated. A relationship between the total HM content in plants and the HM level in soil was found for a wide range of concentrations. The exchangeable fraction of HMs extracted with 1 M MgCl2 solution according to Tessiers method increased correlation with the dosage of supplemented HMs, then decreased as time went on. The time-related variation of exchangeable HMs in soil demonstrated that the amount of effective HMs taken up by paddy differed at various growth phases. The amount of HMs accumulated in different parts of paddy followed the order of root > stem > grain, leaf. The transportation potential of the HMs in paddy in present study followed the order of Zn, Cr > Cd, Cu > Pb. The HM content in root, stem and leaf of paddy plant (dry weight) was low at time of seedling. The concentration in the root increased sharply at time of tillering, decreased thereafter. The concentrations in stem and leaf reached the highest at time of tillering, then decreased, while rose slightly at following time.

STUDY OF THE DIFFUSE GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM THE GALACTIC PLANE WITH ARGO-YBJ

The events recorded by ARGO-YBJ in more than fiveyears of data collection have been analyzed to determine the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the Galactic plane at Galactic longitudes 25° < l < 100° and Galactic latitudes b 5 ∣ ∣< °. The energy range covered by this analysis, from ∼350 GeV to ∼2 TeV, allows the connection of the region explored by Fermi with the multi-TeV measurements carried out by Milagro. Our analysis has been focused on two selected regions of the Galactic plane, i.e., 40° < l < 100° and 65° < l <8 5 °( the Cygnus region), where Milagro observed an excess with respect to the predictions of current models. Great care has been taken in order to mask the most intense gamma-ray sources, including the TeV counterpart of the Cygnus cocoon recently identified by ARGO-YBJ, and to remove residual contributions. The ARGO-YBJ results do not show any excess at sub-TeV energies corresponding to the excess found by Milagro, and are consistent with the predictions of the Fermi model for the diffuse Galactic emission. From the measured energy distribution we derive spectral indices and the differential flux at 1 TeV of the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the sky regions investigated.

Different mechanism of two-proton emission from proton-rich nuclei 23 Al and 22 Mg

Two-proton relative momentum (q(pp)) and opening angle (theta(pp)) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely Al-23 --> p + p + Na-21 and Mg-22 --> p + p + Ne-20, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at q(pp) similar to 20 MeV/c as well as a peak in theta(pp) around 30 degrees are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited Mg-22. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the Al-23 case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited Mg-22 is quite different from the Al-23 case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process

Isospin effect in statistical sequential decay

Isospin effect of the statistical emission fragments from the equilibrated source is investigated in the frame of statistical binary decay implemented into the GEMINI code, isoscaling behavior is observed and the dependences of isoscaling parameters alpha and beta on emission fragment size, source size, source isospin asymmetry and excitation energies are studied. Results show that alpha and beta neither depends on light fragment size nor on source size. A good linear dependence of alpha and beta on the inverse of temperature T is manifested and the relationship of alpha=4C(sym)[(Z(s)/A(s))(1)(2)-(Z(s)/A(s))(2)(2)]/T and beta=4C(sym)[(N-s/A(s))(1)(2)-(N-s/A(s))(2)(2)]/T from different isospin asymmetry sources is satisfied. The symmetry energy coefficient C-sym extracted from simulation results is similar to 23 MeV which includes both the volume and surface term contributions, of which the surface effect seems to play a significant role in the symmetry energy.

A Future Laser Compton Scattering (LCS) γ-Ray Source: SLEGS at SSRF

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) is a third-generation synchrotron radiation light source and will come into commission in April 2009. The project Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS), which is a high intensity γ-ray beamline based on Laser Compton Scattering (LCS) between relativistic electron bunches and a laser, has been proposed at the SSRF. According to our simulations, the SLEGS is expected to generate a polarized γ-ray beam of up to 22 MeV and 109–10 photons/s if using 3.5 GeV, 200–300 mA relativistic electrons and a 500 W CO2 polarized laser. Here we describe the status and the application prospects of SLEGS and its developed prototype.

Influence of statistical sequential decay on isoscaling and symmetry energy coefficient in a GEMINI simulation

Extensive calculations on isoscaling behavior with the sequential-decay model gemini are performed for the medium-to-heavy nuclei in the mass range A = 60-120 at excitation energies up to 3 MeV/nucleon. The comparison between the products after the first-step decay and the ones after the entire-steps decay demonstrates that there exists a strong sequential decay effect on the final isoscaling parameters and the apparent temperature. Results show that the apparent symmetry energy coefficient gamma(app) does not reflect the initial symmetry energy coefficient C(sym) embedded in the mass calculation in the present GEMINI model.

Hindered proton collectivity in 16(28)S12: possible magic number at Z=16.

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0(gs)(+)→2(1)(+)) for (28)S was obtained experimentally using Coulomb excitation at 53 MeV/nucleon. The resultant B(E2) value 181(31) e(2)fm(4) is smaller than the expectation based on empirical B(E2) systematics. The double ratio |M(n)/M(p)|/(N/Z) of the 0(gs)(+)→2(1)(+) transition in (28)S was determined to be 1.9(2) by evaluating the M(n) value from the known B(E2) value of the mirror nucleus (28)Mg, showing the hindrance of proton collectivity relative to that of neutrons. These results indicate the emergence of the magic number Z=16 in the |T(z)|=2 nucleus (28)S.
