Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) of solid waste collection methods using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) outputs

H. Ziya Ulukan; Yesim Kop

This paper presents the selection of the most suitable system between new collection systems focused on improving waste recovery rate. A large part of solid waste can be recovered in some way. Recycling, energy production, composting are some of the recovery techniques. To obtain a high level of solid waste recovery, the waste must be collected according to some rules. Different collection methods are compared with fuzzy TOPSIS method, according to financial, social and environmental criteria. The originality of this paper is that the decision making process is enriched by the use of environmental impact data. In most of the studies, financial and social aspects are used to compare these methods but due to multiplicity of environmental factors and their complexity, environmental aspect has been neglected. This paper evaluates the environmental effects through Life Cycle Assessment methodology.

End-of-Life Tyres Recovery Method Selection in Turkey by Using Fuzzy Extended AHP

Yesim Kop; Mujde Erol Genevois; H. Ziya Ulukan

This study focuses on ‘Tyres and Tyre related wastes’. End of Life Tyres (ELT) are detected according to waste and waste disposal regulations. Many studies have been conducted in different countries in order to determine the most suitable ELT recovery method. The results vary depending on economical, social and legislative conditions of the country. This research includes a survey on global ELT engendering, ELT disposal methods then focuses on the situation in Turkey. Its aim is to make an ELT disposal method selection for Turkey, considering current conditions. Considering the lack of quantitative data and the presence of qualitative perspectives, the selection has been made using a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) tool named Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). To handle the imprecise nature of the expert judgments, this study proposes the fuzzy extended AHP as selection method.

Analytic Network Process approach for automatic teller machines deployment problem

Mujde Erol Genevois; Derya Celik; H. Ziya Ulukan

Deciding facility location is a hard and sophisticated problem for decision makers as there are many criteria some of which are conflicting and subjective. Determining the location of an automatic teller machine (ATM) for deployment is also a challenging decision for banks which has not been addressed adequately in the literature up to now. Where to locate the automatic teller machines is a strategic and long-term decision therefore making the right decision is important for the banks. In this paper, both qualitative and quantitative criteria that should be considered are defined for ATM deployment problem. The criteria are categorized into main clusters in accordance with their similar characteristics and the interdependencies between them are explained. Analytic Network Process (ANP) methodology is preferred to evaluate the importance levels of these criteria. This study intends to build up a generic framework that can be used afterwards to determine the best locations for off-site ATMs of a bank which cover all customer demand and keep costs at a minimum level in ATM deployment problem. The study also covers the banks which have ATMs or do not have any ATMs and searching for the best locations in order to deploy new ATMs.
