Software technological roles, usability, and reusability

Mark Burgin; Haesun K. Lee; Narayan C. Debnath

Software reuse is an important and relatively new approach to software engineering. The aim is further development of a methodology and mathematical theory of software metrics for evaluation of software reusability. In the second section, going after Introduction, it is demonstrated that reusability is a form of usability. This allows one to use experience in the development and utilization of software usability metrics for the development and utilization of software reuse metrics. In the third section, different types and classes of software metrics are explicated and compared, while in the fourth section, software metrics and their properties in a formalized context are studied. The research is oriented at the advancement of software engineering and, in particular, at creation of more efficient reuse metrics.

Metrics for evaluation of workflow models: An experiment for validation

Narayan C. Debnath; Haesun K. Lee; Mario Peralta; Carlos Humberto Salgado; German Montejano; Daniel Riesco; Mario Berón

Due to the dynamism of business, it is very important to support continuous improvement and automation of business processes. The Workflow Management Systems WMS is one of the most significant technologies for such automation. Likewise, the quality of business process models is essential to facilitate understandability and adaptability of models to the constant changes experienced by the processes they represent. Therefore, it is fundamental to have tools to choose from several modeling alternatives, the most appropriate to the business needs. It is also essential to have tools to measure the quality of these models. Therefore, we propose a set of metrics for measuring the quality of workflow models based on their adaptability and understandability. In addition, we introduce the results of the first practical validation of the metrics through a comparative experiment of two Workflow modeling languages: YAWL Vs UML Activity Diagrams 2.0.

Measuring testing as a distributed component of the software life cycle

Mark Burgin; Narayan C. Debnath; Haesun K. Lee

We study software testing as a distributed component of the software life cycle, developing a technique for estimating testing validity. The goal of this paper is to build measures for testing result estimation, to find how tested properties influence software quality, and to develop means (methodology and algorithms) to achieve better results in testing. To achieve these goals, we suggest using system approach to testing developed in this paper and introduce a system of test efficiency measures, as well as discuss a methodology of how to use these measures. Properties of test efficiency measures oriented at the software engineering domain are studied. We also show (Proposition 1, Theorem 1 and their Corollaries) how logic can increase testing efficiency.

Reusing OE-Scheduler in Aperiodic Environments

Haesun K. Lee; Ilhyun Lee

OEA-scheduler is a scheduler that generates a schedule of aperiodic tasks and periodic tasks by the principle of eliminating unnecessary context switches under the rate monotonic algorithm. This new scheduler will minimize the average response time of aperiodic tasks and also guarantee the hard deadlines of an arbitrary number of periodic tasks in hard real-time environments. In previous research, the OE-scheduler was developed to schedule periodic tasks only, and later improved to use object-oriented methods. Due to the object-oriented approach, the authors have been able to reuse the OE-scheduler algorithm and extend it to work with both periodic tasks and aperiodic tasks. An object oriented design of the scheduler will be presented, along with an implementation result

A testing and analysis tool for certain 3-variable functions

Narayan C. Debnath; Haesun K. Lee; Mark Burgin; Eric Thiemann

The object oriented design and implementation of an automated software testing tool is presented. The tool mechanically generates the test cases using the specifications of certain 3-variable functions and automatically run the test cases on a specified software to evaluate correctness. The tool can be reused for other related functions.

An ontology for the interoperability of hydrological simulation model

Mónica del Carmen Gil; Mario Berón; German Montejano; Daniel Riesco; Haesun K. Lee; Narayan C. Debnath

Simulation models have been used successfully to understand processes and to assist the formulation and evaluation of several systems. The general case is that the models are not well specified and documented. This peculiarity produces interoperability problems, such as: replicating tasks, wasting the potential of the simulation models and those systems that use them. Considering the above mentioned problem and with the aim at providing solutions, the Hydrological Domain is taken as study focus. In this context, an ontology was defined by using the Methontology method. As is well known an ontology provides a common vocabulary. It is based on a set of concepts and relations between them. Therefore, it can be used to facilitate the systems interoperation. The ontology defined was validated by using a survey. This survey was distributed between the experts of hydro-logical domain. The result obtained was promissory for two main reasons. The first one, an agreement was reached which allows establishing the basic requirements for the interoperability of hydrological systems that use simulation models. The second one is concerned with solving the general interoperability problem. In this sense, an approach, based on ontologies, for reaching the interoperability of whatever system was delineated. For the reasons mentioned above, we believe that the ontology defined is an interesting contribution for solving the interoperability problems of hydrological systems. This is because it provides a conceptual framework that makes it possible to share results which are all interpreted in the same way for all hydrological systems. Needless to say that the approach used in this work can be applied to solve any interoperability problem.

Algorithmic Design and Implementation of an Automated Testing Tool

Jason R. Meek; Narayan C. Debnath; Ilhyun Lee; Haesun K. Lee

This paper presents the design and implementation of an automated software testing tool. The described tool mechanically creates test cases for specific three-variable functions. The results of the testing tool are validated against predetermined results for each test case to measure correctness. This testing tool can be adapted and reused for similar functions.

A novel approach for hierarchical clustering in non - binary search space

G. Praveen Kumar; Anirban Sarkar; Ilhyun Lee; Haesun K. Lee; Narayan C. Debnath

Data clustering is one of the powerful techniques for the knowledge discovery from data. In this paper, a novel approach for hierarchical clustering has been proposed over non-binary search space. Besides the agglomerative methods, the proposed algorithm has considered the Strength of Presence associated with each transaction, to yield quality clusters which are again more close to the real life situation. The algorithm is also capable to produce clusters with customizable varying density along with varying number of clusters.

Design and implementation of a reusable software tool with application

Narayan C. Debnath; Ilhyun Lee; Haesun K. Lee; Sergiu M. Dascalu; John Ho; Mary Yip

This paper describes the design and implementation of a software tool that can be reused for an empirical validation experiment of several commonly used software metrics in object-oriented environments. A detailed description of the steps of the potential validation experiment is provided. An overview of the software metrics considered and the required implementation of the test data to be used in the proposed experiment are also presented.
