Daojuan Wang; Hamid Moini; John Kuada

Numerous waves of mergers and acquisitions (MA Martynova and Renneboog 2008). Other studies (Larimo and Pynnonen 2008; Kallunki et al. 2001), on the other hand, have concluded that, on average, foreign direct investment has significant value creating effects for investing firm shareholders. The researchers continue to be bewildered by the unpredictable nature of MA Haleblian et al. 2009).

Internationalisation of family-owned businesses in a geographically remote area

Hamid Moini; John Kuada; Arnim Decker

This exploratory study uses a multiple case-study method of five family-owned firms in Northern Denmark. We examined a number of research questions, which were identified from the literature that may influence the internationalisation of family-owned businesses. These questions included: 1) locational liabilities; 2) degree of familiness exhibited by family-owned firms; 3) firm characteristics and nature of their products; 4) growth motive and access to information about foreign markets. Our findings suggest that internationalisation of family-owned firms is a function of its location, availability of infrastructure, family connection, and access to information about foreign markets. Although the owner of the most internationalised firm in the study was willing to give up short-term profits during the start-up period on international expansion, most of the companies in the study were unwilling to give up their short-term profitability. In addition, the more internationalised firms produce more of standardised products than customised ones; the technology contents of their products do not seem to be a determining factor in their internationalisation.

Hamid Moini; Olav Jull Sørensen; Eva Szuchy-Kristiansen

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to examine the issue of corporate environmentalism from a managerial perspective, specifically in connection to top management commitment and the need for competitive advantage, which can be integrated into the decision making of environmental strategies. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses data from a recent online survey of 77 Danish firms. Surveyed firms in the study were divided into two categories based on their adoption of a green strategy. Univariate analysis of variance and step-wise discriminant analysis were used to identify variables that discriminate between these firms. Findings – The results revealed that systematic planning to develop a green strategy coupled with each firms view of the importance of formulating and implementing a green strategy are the key factors discriminating between the two groups of firms. Research limitations/implications – Since this study did not consider external factors such as, governmental regulation, NGO press...

Internationalisation of family-owned businesses in the Czech Republic

Expectations before privatisation and market realities after privatisation: technology transfer

George Tesar; Hamid Moini; Jerome K. Laurent

Recently privatised firms in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries are searching for Western European partners to transfer their technologies to Western countries. The differences in expectations between CEE managers and their Western counterparts increased as privatisation efforts intensified. This paper proposes a model which can explain the differences in expectations before privatisation and market realities after privatisation, between CEE managers and their Western counterparts in terms of technology transfer out and into CEE.
