Process of multi technical education in biomedical engineers curricula

Marek Penhaker; Jindrich Cernohorsky; Hana Sochorová; Martin Cerny

Biomedical engineering, clinical engineering and medical informatics represent interdisciplinary branches which are very progressive and acknowledged and which intervene into many spheres. The mentioned branches apply various technical principles and skills in biology and medicine: from proposals, construction and implementation, to the servicing of medical technology. These inspired to change the structure of curricula of the study branch and also the conception of some classes to better cover the legislative needs. Nowadays the study field biomedical engineering is educated as study fild in bachelor and master study at VSB -Technical university of Ostrava, Faculty of electrical engineering and computer science with cooperation of Medico-Social faculty of the University of Ostrava teaching medico - social courses. The courses are mainly provided in special laboratories which combines multi-technical proposition to solve during education in teams.

The new “Act on Paramedical Professions” has been adopted in the Czech Republic in 2004. The act governs the conditions for the obtaining of qualifications for pursuing paramedical professions and for carrying out activities related to the provision of health care. The more accurate conditions has been defined later in a concurring decree in 2005.

Comparison between normal and TOR-anonymized web client traffic

Tomás˘ Lis˘ka; Tomas Sochor; Hana Sochorová

Abstract TOR is known free tool for traffic anonymization on the Internet. The adverse aspect of using TOR is significant increase of overhead and decrease of the traffic speed. So far no study focusing the quantification of such decrease was published. TOR operation is based on “routing” the traffic through several nodes resulting in difficult and practically impossible direct calculation of the delay caused by TOR application. Therefore the study was performed to quantify the delay associated with using TOR comparing ordinary traffic. Www was used as a model of Internet traffic. The sample of 14 stable www pages and 8-10 files available via http throughout the world was chosen and the round-trip time was measured approx. 10 times both with TOR (at least in two configurations, first automatic and the second manually modified) and without TOR. For manual TOR measurement two onion routers were configured in two locations. Measurements were made in various days of week and various times to eliminate possible fluctuations due to varying traffic target www servers. The main result of the study is that the factor of roundtrip time increase varies between 2 and more than 100. In case of configured TOR networks the ratio is lower but still high,1.7 and 34. This is quite rough result that is shown in details in the article. The results show that TOR is useful anonymization tool but the delay caused by its use is enormous. Providing of more exact estimations would require more measurements however.

Biomedical engineering education at VSB — Technical University of Ostrava

Jindrich Cernohorsky; Marek Penhaker; Hana Sochorová

Biomedical engineering, clinical engineering and medical informatics represent interdisciplinary branches which are very progressive and acknowledged and which intervene into many spheres. The mentioned branches apply various technical principles and skills in biology and medicine: from proposals, construction and implementation, to the servicing of medical technology. Changes both concerning the overall higher education system in Czech Republic and from changes in legislation resulting from the Czech Republic’s entrance into the EU influenced the formation of a new type of biomedical study field. This law defines, for the first time, the term lifelong learning in healthcare and exchanged activities, which are perceived as lifelong education. This law also modified the process of obtaining certification to work without a supervisor, which until then supervision was a requirement for this field of work. These edicts are part of the administered law regulation, which defines an altogether new standing of technical staff in the healthcare system. These edicts have a strong impact on branches such as Biomedical Technology which is explicitly discussed and cited in relation with standard professions like “Biomedical Technician”. “Biomedical Engineer” in which the graduates will find employment. Another edict follows and extends the edict in accordance with EU edicts and makes minimal alterations to both theoretical and practical classes which gives the program professional qualification with which to operate and create non-medical healthcare professionals. These changes inspired the needs to change the structure of curricula of the study branch and also the conception of some classes to better cover the legislative needs. Nowadays the study field biomedical engineering is educated as study fild in bachelor and master study at VSB — Technical university of Ostrava, Faculty of electrical engineering and computer science with cooperation of Medico-Social faculty of the University of Ostrava teaching medico — social courses.
