Sound Reduction Study of Insulator of Zinc-alume Metal-roofing. Metal roofing is a common upper-structure of wide-span building. The metal material usually used as roof covering is zinc-alume; which has better performance in strength, easy-construction and its durability than other metal material. Although it has good structural performance, its performance as a sound reduction to reduce noise to the room beneath still need to be studied further. Therefore this research aimed to study how zinc-alume and its insulator perform through air-borne noise, besides structure-borne/impact noise. Insulator has been studied here are the Orca-zinc coating, glasswool, rockwool and styrofoam. The measurement done in a reverberation chamber, with pink noise source in 125 Hz- 4000 Hz frequency.

This paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation between predicted and practice concrete strength. The scope of the evaluation is the optimisation of the cement content for different concrete grades as a result of bringing the target mean value of tests cubes closer to the required characteristic strength value by reducing the standard deviation.

The using of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is one of many alternatives that can be used to decrease dam construction cost. Many Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) composition has been developed to achieve maximum compressive strength. Due to the economical consideration and the possibility of the execution, drop hammer system has been used for this research. Compression test is done after the age of the sample reaches seven, 28, 60, and 90 days. The result shows that 60/40 composition of gravel/sand has higher average compressive strength on all age of sample. The highest compressive strength the achieve is 17.78 MPa for 90 days sample.The slake-durability test is regarded as a simple test for assessing weathering of rocks. This simple test has been accepted as a standard test by the Rock Mechanics Society. However, mechanisms into slaking processes have not been fully understood yet as many factors involved in the processes. The current research explored mechanisms performed by the test by conducting a series of slakedurability tests for four types of soft rocks taken from Coober Pedy, South Australia. Results show that the slake-durability index (Id2) of weathered soft rocks was influenced by the degree of weathering. Distinctly weathered rocks had lower indeces compared to partly weathered rocks. Shapes also influenced the Id2 of these soft rocks. Different shapes displayed different mechanisms in the slaking processes. Samples that had irregular shapes tended to have a lower Id2 compared to samples that had rounded shapes. Thus, the slake-durability test might have simple procedures, but it could have complicated mechanisms in slaking processes that contribute to the result of the test.A method commonly used to stabilize expansive soils is mixing the soil with foreign materials. The main obstacle raised from soil stabilization in the field is the difficulty in mixing process. This paper presents the strength distribution in soft soil due to the addition of single columns of quicklime and carbide wasteproduct from gas industry that contains Calcium Oxide (CaO) up to 60%. The results show that the addition of columns filled with carbide waste product and quicklime increase the shear strength of surrounding soil. The spreading of the strength tends to follow a unique pattern, that the increase of soil shear strength at a certain normalized-distance, S (in column diameter D) from the column axis is constant. A significant increase of strength occurs in the area closer to the column, and it decreases with the distance from the column.

The outrigger and belt truss system is commonly used as one of the structural system to effectively control the excessive drift due to lateral load, so that, during small or medium lateral load due to either wind or earthquake load, the risk of structural and non-structural damage can be minimized. For high-rise buildings, particularly in seismic active zone or wind load dominant, this system can be chosen as an appropriate structure. This paper studies the use of outrigger and belt truss system for high-rise concrete building subjected to wind or earthquake load. Eight 40−storey two dimensional models of outrigger and belt truss system are subjected to wind load; and five 60−storey three dimensional models are subjected to earthquake load, analyzed and compared to find the lateral displacement reduction related to the outrigger and belt system location. For the two dimensional 40−storey model, 65% maximum displacement reduction can be achieved by providing first outrigger at the top and second outrigger at the middle of the structure height. For the three dimensional 60−storey structural model subjected to the earthquake load, about 18 % reduction in maximum displacement can be achieved with optimum location of the outrigger truss placed at the top and the 33rd level.The importance of understanding the performance of a building in a holistic sense is undeniable. This paper presents a method of total building performance evaluation, which has been widely used in many developed countries including Singapore. An office building with apartment and commercial retails called “intelligent building” is selected for building diagnosis. The occupant surveys and physical walkthroughs are carried out as subjective evaluations, while some objective measurements of indoor air quality and visual quality are also introduced in this study. The results indicate that generally, the occupants are satisfied with the quality of the building despite some insignificant indoor air quality and visual symptoms due to low temperature and glare problem in the office.

Buckling of a through girder generally is predicted by the so called U-frame approach which treats the compressed top flanges as compression members restrained elastically by the web stiffness. This study used a line-type finite element analysis to examine buckling behaviour of through girders, both a single span girder and a continuous girder. The elastic buckling loads were plotted for a range of span to height ratio.Recent research findings on pricing strategies both in general and in construction are reviewed and explored. First, pricing strategy in general, mostly in the manufacturing industry, is reviewed. It includes the concepts of pricing strategy, predatory pricing, price wars, and price policy development. Second, pricing strategy in construction is explored. It includes various pricing models for bid price determination, such as the Friedman-Gates models, expected utility models, risk-pricing model, and the crew-day, multiple regression, and fuzzy-set pricing models. In conclusion, pricing strategies in construction are still predominantly based on a cost-based approach. More recent models try to close the gap between the models and the real life conditions of a bidder’s decision-making process. It appears that there are more problems in cost-based pricing as opposed to market-based pricing. Consequently, it is highly recommended that, alternative pricing approach such as that are closer to the proposed market-based pricing model need to be explored and developed for use in the construction industry.
