Forward osmosis (FO) processes have recently attracted increasing attention and show great potential as a low-energy separation technology for water regeneration and seawater desalination. However, a number of challenges, such as internal concentration polarization, membrane fouling, and the trade-off effect, limit the scaleup and industrial practicality of FO. Hence, a versatile method is needed to address these problems and fabricate ideal FO membranes. Among the many methods, incorporating polymeric FO membranes with inorganic nanomaterials is widely used and effective and is reviewed in this paper. The properties of FO membranes can be improved and meet the demands of various applications with the incorporation of nanomaterials. This review presents the actualities and advantages of organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite FO membranes. Nanomaterials applied in the FO field, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, halloysite nanotubes, silica and Ag nanoparticles, are classified and compared in this review. The effects of modification methods on the performance of nanocomposite FO membranes, including blending, in situ interfacial polymerization, surface grafting and layer-by-layer assembly, are also reviewed. The outlook section discusses the prospects of organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite FO membranes and advanced nanotechnologies available for FO processes. This discussion may provide new opportunities for developing novel FO membranes with high performance.

A Heuristic Approach to Reconstruct Triangle Mesh from Unorganized Point Cloud

Hanming Lv; Yang Wang

A heuristic algorithm was presented to reconstruct triangle mesh from unorganized point cloud, and a new error evaluation rule was presented to measure the reconstruction errors. The triangle meshes were reconstructed through two phases of mesh growing based on different strategies, where regions with high point density usually grow at the first phase and the remaining regions grow later. In each phase of mesh growing, the smoothest regions always grow firstly and then largely avoid errors emerging in sharp regions. The reformative best point selection method can improve the topology and geometry quality of the reconstructed meshes. The presented error estimation was inspired by the level of detail model and was also can be used in other region grow reconstruction approaches. Experiments show that the algorithm is efficient and effective.

Development of Automatic Downloads System for Slub Yarn Parameters Based on MODBUS/TCP

Yue-gang Liu; Chongqi Ma; Hanming Lv

In order to solve the issue of laborious and time-consuming caused by excessive parameters manual inputting during slub yarn production, a system was developed to realize the database management and automatic downloads of slub yarn parameters included slub length, base length and multiple. This invention relates to slub yarn controller with human machine interface (HMI) and programmable logic controller (PLC). It’s a configuration system based on MODBUS/TCP communication protocol between King View and HMI that saves time and reduces the mistakes for the operators. The system realizes integrate controlling, which improve the automatic level.

Using Capacitance Sensor to Identify the Appearance Parameters of Slub Yarn

Hanming Lv; Chongqi Ma

A heuristic approach was presented in this paper to identify the appearance parameters of slub yarn. The signal of slub yarn was firstly acquired with a capacitance sensor and a DAQ (Data AcQuisition) card. The slub yarn signal was then separated into some short parts based on a new local minimal amplitude based method. For each short part, an adaptive threshold was calculated and further adopted to identify the slub parts. Comparing with the global threshold, the local adaptive threshold reduces the negative affection of unevenness. Experimental results show that the presented approach works well.

Partition Triangle Meshes into Coarsely Quadrangular Segmentation

Hanming Lv; Yang Wang

A feature captured approach was presented to automatically partition a triangle meshes into a coarsely quadrangular segmentation. The triangle meshes was firstly partitioned into a polygonal segmentation which was further split into triangular and quadrangular patches. After the convex and concave features were identified, the triangular patches were eliminated according to their topological relations to achieve the quadrangular segmentation. The optimization methods based on globally smooth parameterization and active contour model were also adopted to improve the qualities of quadrangular patches and their edges. The final segmentation consisted of pure-quadrangular patches with appropriate sizes according to the models geometric characteristics, and the features of input model werewell captured.
