Synthia: verification and synthesis for timed automata

We present Synthia, a new tool for the verification and synthesis of open real-time systems modeled as timed automata. The key novelty of Synthia is the underlying abstraction refinement approach [5] that combines the efficient symbolic treatment of timing information by difference bound matrices (DBMs) with the usage of binary decision diagrams (BDDs) for the discrete parts of the system description. Our experiments show that the analysis of both closed and open systems greatly benefits from identifying large relevant and irrelevant system parts on coarse abstractions early in the solution process. Synthia is licensed under the GNU GPL and available from our website.

Template-Based controller synthesis for timed systems

We present an effective controller synthesis method for real-time systems modeled as timed automata with safety requirements. Under the realistic assumption of partial observability, the problem is undecidable in general, and prohibitively expensive (2ExpTime-complete) if a bound on the granularity of the controller is set in advance. We investigate the synthesis of controllers from templates, given as timed automata with parametric control structure. Template-based synthesis is significantly cheaper (PSpace-complete) than standard synthesis and produces much simpler controllers. We present an efficient symbolic synthesis algorithm based on automatic abstraction refinement and report on encouraging experimental results from an implementation in the timed verification and synthesis tool synthia.

Can we build it: formal synthesis of control strategies for cooperative driver assistance systems

We propose a design and verification methodology supporting the early phases of system design for cooperative driver assistance systems, focusing on the realisability of new automotive functions. Specifically, we focus on applications where drivers are supported in complex driving tasks by safe strategies involving the coordinated movements of multiple vehicles to complete the driving task successfully. We propose a divide and conquer approach for formally verifying timed probabilistic requirements on successful completion of the driving task and collision freedom based on formal specifications of a set of given manoeuvring and communication capabilities of the car. In particular, this allows an assessment of whether they are sufficient to implement strategies for successful completion of the driving task.

Fully Symbolic Timed Model Checking Using Constraint Matrix Diagrams

We present constraint matrix diagrams (CMDs), a novel data structure for the fully symbolic reach ability analysis of timed automata. CMDs combine matrix-based and diagram-based state space representations generalizing the concepts of difference bound matrices (DBMs), clock difference diagrams (CDDs), and clock restriction diagrams (CRDs). The key idea is to represent convex parts of the state space as (partial) DBMs which are, in turn, organized in a CDD/CRD-like ordered and reduced diagram. The location information is incorporated as a special Boolean constraint in the matrices. We describe all CMD operations needed for the construction of the transition relation and the reach ability fixed point computation. Based on a prototype implementation, we compare our technique with the timed model checkers RED and Uppaal, and furthermore investigate the impact of two different reduced forms on the time and space consumption.

Combining symbolic representations for solving timed games

We present a general approach to combine symbolic state space representations for the discrete and continuous parts in the synthesis of winning strategies for timed reachability games. The combination is based on abstraction refinement where discrete symbolic techniques are used to produce a sequence of abstract timed game automata. After each refinement step, the resulting abstraction is used for computing an under- and an over-approximation of the timed winning states. The key idea is to identify large relevant and irrelevant parts of the precise weakest winning strategy already on coarse, and therefore simple, abstractions. If neither the existence nor nonexistence of a winning strategy can be established in the approximations, we use them to guide the refinement process. Based on a prototype that combines binary decision diagrams [7,9] and difference bound matrices [5], we experimentally evaluate the technique on standard benchmarks from timed controller synthesis. The results clearly demonstrate the potential of the new approach concerning running time and memory consumption compared to the classical on-the-fly algorithm implemented in UPPAAL-TIGA [10,4].

Model checking the FlexRay physical layer protocol

The FlexRay standard, developed by a cooperation of leading companies in the automotive industry, is a robust communication protocol for distributed components in modern vehicles. In this paper, we present the first timed automata model of its physical layer protocol, and we use automatic verification to prove fault tolerance under several error models and hardware assumptions. The key challenge in the analysis is that the correctness of the protocol relies on the interplay of the bit-clock alignment mechanism with the precise timing behavior of the underlying asynchronous hardware. We give a general hardware model that is parameterized in low-level timing details such as hold times and propagation delays. Instantiating this model for a realistic design from the Nangate Open Cell Library, and verifying the resulting model using the real-time model checker UPPAAL, we show that the communication system meets, and in fact exceeds, the fault-tolerance guarantees claimed in the FlexRay specification.

Component-Based Abstraction Refinement for Timed Controller Synthesis

We present a novel technique for synthesizing controllers for distributed real-time environments with safety requirements. Our approach is an abstraction refinement extension to the on-the-fly algorithm by Cassez et al. from 2005. Based on partial compositions of some environment components, each refinement cycle constructs a sound abstraction that can be used to obtain under- and over-approximations of all valid controller implementations. This enables (1) early termination if an implementation does not exist in the over-approximation, or, if one does exist in the under-approximation, and (2) pruning of irrelevant moves in subsequent refinement cycles. In our refinement loop, the precision of the abstractions incrementally increases and converges to all specification-critical components. We implemented our approach in a prototype synthesis tool and evaluated it on an industrial benchmark. In comparison with the timed game solver UPPAAL-Tiga, our technique outperforms the nonincremental approach by an order of magnitude.

Making the right cut in model checking data-intensive timed systems

The success of industrial-scale model checkers such as UPPAAL [3] or NUSMV [12] relies on the efficiency of their respective symbolic state space representations. While difference bound matrices (DBMs) are effective for representing sets of clock values, binary decision diagrams (BDDs) can efficiently represent huge discrete state sets. In this paper, we introduce a simple general framework for combining both data structures, enabling a joint symbolic representation of the timed state sets in the reachability fixed point construction. In contrast to other approaches, our technique is robust against intricate interdependencies between clock constraints and the location information. Especially in the analysis of models with only few clocks, large constants, and a huge discrete state space (such as, e.g., data-intensive communication protocols), our technique turns out to be highly effective. Additionally, our framework allows to employ existing highly-optimized implementations for DBMs and BDDs without modifications. Using a prototype implementation, we are able to verify a central correctness property of the physical layer protocol of the FlexRay communication protocol [15] taking an unreliable physical layer into account.

RESY: requirement synthesis for compositional model checking

The requirement synthesis tool RESY automatically computes environment assumptions for compositional model checking. Given a process M in a multi-process PROMELA program, an abstraction refinement loop computes a coarse equivalence relation on the states of the environment, collapsing two states if the environment of M can either force the occurrence of an error from both states or from neither state. RESY supports three different operation modes: assumption generation, compositional model checking, and front-end to the model checker SPIN. In assumption generation mode, RESY minimizes the size of the assumption; small assumptions are useful for program documentation and as certificates for re-verification. In compositional model checking mode, RESY terminates as soon as the property is proven or disproven, independently of the size of the assumption. In front-end mode, RESY terminates when the size of the assumption falls below a specified threshold, and calls SPIN with the simplified verification problem.

Synthesizing Certificates in Networks of Timed Automata

We present an automatic method for the synthesis of certificates for components in embedded real-time systems. A certificate is a small homomorphic abstraction that can transparently replace the component during model checking: if the verification with the certificate succeeds, then the component is guaranteed to be correct; if the verification with the certificate fails, then the component itself must be erroneous. We give a direct construction, based on a forward and backward reachability analysis of the timed system, and an iterative refinement process, which produces a series of successively smaller certificates. In our experiments, model checking the certificate is several orders of magnitude faster than model checking the original system.
