Efficient, Real-Time Address Resolution in Backbone Networks

This article presents a novel, dynamic address resolution procedure for highspeed, general-topology backbone networks with group management and hardware-supported multicast facilities. By making efficient use of these particular network features, the described procedure induces only minimal communication and processing overhead independent of the size of the backbone network and the number of attached external networks. The procedure further imposes no architectural limit on the set of supported address spaces, and it meets the timing requirements for address resolution of a very wide range of interconnected external networks, including but not limited to, LANs and MANs.
