Integration of women into the U.S. military

Harold E. Cheatham

This study reports male attitudes toward women beginning with the admission of women in 1976 to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. It assesses these attitudes as a consequence of the norms of the military system and notes a trend toward more positive attitudes by successive classes since the Class of 1979. Programmatic measures to nurture and facilitate this positive trend are recommended.

Effects of counselor intake judgments on service to black students using a university counseling center

Saundra M. Tomlinson; Harold E. Cheatham

Abstract The effect of counselor and client ethnicity and gender was examined using a four factor MANOVA. Although the statistical findings were non-significant, it is suggested that systematic biases based on client attributes may affect counselors perceptions of clients thereby influencing diagnostic judgments and treatment choice.

Occupation equity: A black and white portrait of women in the united states military

Harold E. Cheatham; Susan R. Seem

This study examines U.S. military occupation equity with a special focus on African-American women. The dependent variable was occupation category. A three-way interaction of race by gender by mental group was found, making untenable the contention that mental group solely predicts personnel assignment to occupation category. Women, and particularly African-American women, are underrepresented in the core, technical occupations and overrepresented in the nontechnical, support occupations examined in this study. The opposite is true for white men. Social and psychological factors are postulated regarding women’s disproportionate employment in traditionally female and lower status occupations.
