This paper reviews the design concepts of the MPEG-DASH standard and how it can be employed for the delivery of live multimedia content over the Internet. MPEG-DASH is the MPEGs newest standard for streaming of multimedia content and is designed to leverage the extensive HTTP infrastructure that has evolved with the growth of the World Wide Web. The standard defines specifications for manifest and segment formats used between the content servers and the client devices. This paper focuses on the live streaming of video content, its challenges and how MPEG-DASH can be used for this application.
