We present general solutions to the Wess-Zumino anomaly equation which incorporate vector mesons as dynamical gauge bosons of the hidden local symmetry in the nonlinear chiral Lagrangian. In contrast to the previous attempts to introduce the vector mesons, our formalism enables one to treat consistently and systematically various processes associated with pseudoscalar mesons (Nambu-Goldsone bosons) and vector mesons (dynamical gauge bosons); it is automatic in this framework that the on-shell amplitudes of photons and pseudoscalar mesons such as π^0 →2γ and γ→3 π which are fixed by the low energy theorems, are not affected no matter how the vector mesons participate in those processes. We further show that the “complete vector meson dominance” hypothesis of photon couplings is invalid in either π^0 →2γ or γ→3π process.

Abstract We give BRS charges of the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond model. Nilpotency of the BRS charges determines critical dimension and leading zero-intercepts simultaneously. Using the BRS charges we present a covariantly second-quantized free open superstring action. The massless sector is shown to be a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with covariant gauge-fixing term and the corresponding Faddeev-Popov ghost term.

Abstract Gauge-fixed covariant actions of free open superstring field theory are re-examined and gauge invariant actions are derived systematically from them. The structure of the gauge-fixed actions is made clear in the course of consistently truncating Faddeev-Popov ghost and Nakanishi-Lautrup string fields.

Abstract Wittens Raymond string field theory is observed to possess new gauge symmetries, which guarantee the consistency and the equivalence of Wittens theory to the other formulation based on the constrained string field. The projection operator into the gauge-invariant sector is explicitly constructed using an operator similar to the picture changing operator.

Abstract We investigate the dilaton vertex operator in the covariant formulation of strings. We find that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts play an essential role to construct conformal fields.

Abstract A gauge invariant action of free N =1 closed superstring field theory is presented using BRS charges. This action is shown to take a similar form to that of open superstring. The N =2 closed superstring is also discussed.

Various theoretical problems concerning dynamical generation of composite gauge bosons are discussed. In particular we clarify the general mechanism how massless gauge bosons of hidden local symmetry is created dynamically. Consistency with Weinberg-Witten type no-go theorem is also clarified. We emphasize that such dynamical generations of gauge bosons, massless or massive, are rather common phenomena which can occur easily in a wide variety of systems not restricted in cpN-l model nor in 2 dimensions. As a special example we prove generally that massless graviton must be generated dynamically in any general coordinate invariant systems as far as the background metric is flat Minkowskian.

Wec!:;Q!)struct an operator which converts the BRS charge in the Neveu-Schwarz sector to the one in the Ramond sector based on the fermion emission vertex. We also give space-time supersymmetry transformation laws in the covariant superstring field theory and discuss the relation between supercharge and the vertex.

Abstract It is shown that the existence of a transition operator, which interchanges the BRS charges of the Neveu-Schwarz and the Ramond sectors, implies space-time supersymmetry in the covariant free open superstring field theory proposed previously by the present authors.
