Abstract In the United States geographic knowledge has declined among students. Cooperative learning is an interactive methodology that can foster student group involvement which produces a positive classroom climate through the use of group builders and cooperative projects. The principles of cooperative learning can be and should be applied to the teaching of geography. When cooperative learning is used, students become more involved in the subject and more motivated to learn content. Geographic knowledge can increase among U.S. students when they are more motivated to learn. A variety of cooperative learning lessons can bring about that motivation and increase in knowledge.
