Analysis of load-penetration depth data using Oliver–Pharr and Cheng–Cheng methods of SiAlON–ZrO2 ceramics

Depth sensing indentation tests were carried out to obtain load–penetration depth curves of SiAlON–ZrO2 ceramics under different peak loads ranging from 200 to 1800 mN. The values of indentation hardness (HOP, HCC) and reduced elastic modulus (EOP, ECC) were calculated by using Oliver–Pharr (OP) and Cheng–Cheng (CC) methods. The experimental results revealed that the indentation hardness and reduced elastic modulus exhibit peak-load dependence, i.e. indentation size effect. Both indentation hardness and reduced elastic modulus values were obtained by considering indenter tip roundness and machine compliance. These values obtained from the OP method are higher than from the CC method. On the other hand, hf/hm ratios were used to clarify the indentation deformation behaviour of the SiAlON–ZrO2 ceramic. The experimental hf/hm values were lower than the reported critical value (0.7) for all applied test loads, which is attributed to work-hardening behaviour of SiAlON–ZrO2 composites.

Characterization and properties of industrial polymer matrix composite sanitarywares

Gökhan Açıkbaş; Hasan Gocmez

Abstract Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) play an increasingly important role in everyday life from energy conservation to national security. Recently, PMCs have been found to be used for sanitaryware due to their low density, giving a sense of warmth, which allows application for broad aesthetic features, high impact resistance, the ease of shaping and the possibility to produce thin sections. It is an alternative to ceramic sanitaryware products. While thin section PMC products range in the forefront with lightness and aesthetic features, thick section PMC products are aroused interest because of the impact resistance and ease of production. Little attention is devoted to the characterization of PMC sanitarywares up to date. Therefore, in order to identify manufacturing processes and determination of the chemical and mineralogical composition, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with SE, BSE and EDX detector, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and thermogravimetric (TG/DTA) analysis of commercial PMC sanitarywares with two different structures (thick and thin sections) were carried out. Mechanical properties such as three-point flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact resistance were identified. As a result of these studies, matrix to filler ratio, filler shape, size and composition and manufacturing technique of PMC sanitarywares were determined. Such understanding is necessary in order to satisfy the market request and to improve the properties of the sanitarywares.

Rapid expansion of TiO2 layers processed by supercritical solutions for dye sensitized solar cell applications

Mustafa Tuncer; Hasan Gocmez; Seher Çetin

Abstract In this work, anatase-type TiO2 layers were prepared by deposition of precursor solution including titanium isopropoxide, ethanol and acetic acetylacetone on a FTO substrate using rapid expansion of supercritical solutions (RESS). The spraying to obtain a particulate coating of TiO2 was carried out at 65 °C and 180 bar of supercritical carbon dioxide environment. Then, thermal annealing at 550 °C for 2 h was applied to coated substrates to obtain desired phase composition. The structural and optical properties of the film were evaluated by XRD, SEM and UV-Vis. SEM observation showed that the photoanode film has porous microstructure with interconnected spherical TiO2 grains. TiO2 film has a band gap of 2.6 eV.
