Analyzing the Crushing of Granular Materials by Sound Analysis Technique

Haydar Arslan; Gokhan Baykal

Signal processing techniques have been introduced in the past two decades into engineering applications to analyze particle-scale microstructure. In this paper, a different approach of signal processing techniques for the geotechnical engineering application is introduced. The crushing of granular particles was analyzed by using the sound analysis technique during the shear process of granular materials. Sound analysis setup was implemented to direct shear box to analyze the crushing of granular materials under shear loading. The microphone signal by using an Electret Microphone is processed and the signal coming from the microphone was analyzed by using the Fourier Transform method. Although the analysis is very complex, it is believed the information obtained will help in understanding when the crushing process begins and the extent of crushing which will lead to better understanding of granular materials subjected to shear.

TENSILE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF LUNAR SOIL SIMULANT JSC-1

Haydar Arslan; Susan N. Batiste; Stein Sture

Lunar soil (regolith) simulant JSC-1 has been widely used by a variety of investigators. Standard laboratory measurements were conducted to characterize the tensile strengths, grain size distribution and other basic behavior. Direct tension experiments were conducted on JSC-1 to determine its tensile strength, which is significant, at different densities. The specimens were prepared through miniature compaction techniques. The effects of density as well as specimen height on the tensile strength are determined. This paper presents the results from extensive experimental studies to illustrate the tensile behavior of JSC-1 regolith simulant, which may be of importance in future designs of infrastructure and in-situ resource utilization on the Moon.
