In this paper, two different paradigms to realize a scalable all-optical packet switch with label swapping will be reviewed. The two paradigms are based on wavelength routing switch and space routing switch. All the functions required for switching the packets, namely, the label processor, the label rewriter, and the optical switch, are based on all-optical signal processing with no electronic control. This allows for very fast processing time and potential photonic integration of the systems. We report, for both techniques, experimental results showing the routing operation of the 160-Gb/s packets and beyond. We will discuss and compare both techniques in terms of devices and bit-rate scalability, power consumption, power penalty performance, and cascadability as key parameters for the realization of an all-optical packet switch.

We demonstrate for the first time 160 Gbps error-free 1times4 all-optical packet switching including all-optical label rewriting. Power penalty 1.5 dB enables application in multihop packet-switched networks.

We propose and demonstrate a new structure of a Data Vortex switch node for all-optical routing of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) 10-Gb/s optical packets. The proposed node consists of two Mach-Zehnder interferometers with integrated semiconductor optical amplifier: an optical and gate and a high-speed optical switch. In the experiment, WDM 10-Gb/s data packets are successfully routed with 1-dB power penalty at a bit-error rate of 10-9.

We demonstrate an all-optical scheme for routing radio signals through optical fibres employing label-processing technique. 10-MS/s 64-QAM signal carried on 5-GHz RF carrier was successfully routed with EVM of 1.81%.

In-building networks delivering broadband wired and wireless services can be realized cost-effectively with duplex plastic optical fibre, particularly when sharing ducts of electrical power cabling. Point-to-point architectures are well-suited for residential buildings, and bus or star-bus ones for larger buildings.

With the Optical Frequency Multiplying technique, high-capacity radio-over-multimode fiber networks can be realized for in-building applications. Dynamic wavelength routing provides extra network flexibility for e.g. delivering capacity-on-demand, and can be realized with optical wavelength conversion.

Novel all-optical and high-speed time-multiplexed space (TMS) switch architectures can be realised with the use of ultra-short pulse sources and ultra-fast all-optical wavelength converters. Example architectures, which only require low speed electronics, are outlined. Experimental results from an associated time-slot interchange architecture demonstrate error-free performance at 40 Gbit/s. The proposed architectures can be used in a WDM/OTDM optical cross-connect node, able to switch circuits in space, wavelength, and time.
