Energy-Efficient Fire Monitoring over Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Networks

Young-Guk Ha; Heemin Kim; Yung-Cheol Byun

Uncontrolled fires occurring in wild areas cause significant damage to natural and human resources. Many countries are looking for ways to fight forest fires at an early stage using sensor networks, by integrating IT technologies. Studies in the fire-related sensor network field are broadly classified into efficient processing of fire data on sensor nodes and energy efficiency during communications among wireless sensor nodes in case of fire. Most studies of sensor network energy efficiency so far mainly focus on extending the connectivity of the entire network and minimizing isolated nodes by applying power evenly to each sensor node through efficient cluster-based routing. This paper proposes an energy-efficient fire monitoring protocol over cluster-based sensor networks. The proposed protocol dynamically creates and reorganizes the sensor network cluster hierarchy according to the direction of fire propagation over the sensor network clusters. This paper also presents experimental results to show that the proposed protocol is more energy efficient than fire monitoring with existing cluster-based sensor network protocols.

Eunyong Park; Sunyoung Han; Heemin Kim; Kiwon Son; Liu Jing

With rapidly growing IPTV market and IPTV standardization activity, multicasting starts to gain a lot of attention again. The use of multicasting conserves the bandwidth of a network and this becomes especially important with wireless channels with limited throughput. But, multicasting over wireless channel is facing many challenges. In this paper, we discuss the challenges for the multicast streaming to provide IPTV service over WLAN and present system architecture to model the wireless IPTV service environment. And we apply a novel CC-FEC (Cross- correlated Forwarding Error Correction) scheme to the model and analyze the efficiency of the scheme.

Dynamic Clustering Model for High Service Availability

Hocheol Sung; Byounguk Choi; Heemin Kim; Jungwook Song; Sunyoung Han; Chee-Wei Ang; Wang-Cho Cheng; Kim-Sing Wong

Current clustering solutions highly depend on pre-configuration by human administrators. However, these clustering solutions are not suitable for the mobile environment because the clustering configuration can be changed as the movement of the server participated in the cluster. Also, when discussing serviceability with the aspect of the quality of services, pre-configured clusters have some defects. If a process of configuration for clusters can be automated, these problems can be solved. With the self-configuration scheme, servers on a network can make clusters dynamically at any time. Any server participating in the cluster can assign its hot standby backup and can also be a backup for another server so that they can provide better services to clients. However, for making the cluster dynamically, the security issue should be considered. For realizing this scheme, the server agent and service description server, called SDS, are designed and implemented. For the security issue, a simple and lightweight authentication approach using DNS server is designed. For watching the state of the overall system, a web-based monitoring tool is also implemented

Miradham Kamilov; Ilhom Karimov; Jungwook Song; Heemin Kim; Sunyoung Han

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) are emerging as one of the promising technologies for the future. It can be a specific case of real-time distributed systems. Ad hoc routing can be applied to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, but some important points should be considered. Main issue in VANET is its high mobility. Once built routing path can be out of order very quickly and needs to be reconstructed with existing routing protocols. In this paper we propose Road Map Based (RMB) routing protocol for real-time vehicular ad hoc networks – routing algorithm which includes some techniques taken from geographical ad hoc routing. It handles mobility using road map and builds stable routing path on the road segments but not on the nodes. Routing path is done through distributed real-time participants of the network. We propose route discovery, data forwarding and route maintenance mechanisms.

Route Optimization in PMIPv6 Environment

Jungwook Song; Heemin Kim; Sunyoung Han

We are now going to the 4G network and in the 4G network environment, there are so many devices connected to the Internet while they are moving. We already have protocol that can support movement of communicating node without any disruption of their connection status named Mobile IP(MIP). But, the major problem of this MIP is too heaviness of the protocol for small mobile nodes. So, IETF finished standardization of Proxy MIP to solve this problem. But, there is no route optimization function in current standard PMIPv6 protocol. In this paper, we propose new route optimization protocol for PMIPv6 and show the results of analysis. With our proposing protocol, we can give a route optimization function to current PMIPv6 with minor changes and we can get many adventages.

Design and implementation for reducing zapping time of IPTV over overlay network

Euijun Kim; Jing Liu; Boyoung Rhee; Sungchol Cho; Heemin Kim; Sunyoung Han

The QoE improvement provides improvement in the speed of internet service. If we can reduce one second of the delay of internet service, there will be a big improvement for the QoE. There is the same situation with IPTV service. Reducing zapping time is the linchpin in the QoE of the IPTV service. The main reason of the zapping time occurrence is the latency when user joins IGMP group. The second causation is the latency of transporting video, and the third one is latency that a settop box takes to encode the video. In this paper, we mainly research how to reduce the latency when the user joins into the IGMP[2] group. In IPTV, each user must join the group according to the IGMP group. We are proposing to tie join messages of the same IPTV groups users together and after send to the server. With this way we can reduce the latency of the joining to the IGMP. In this paper, we analyzed zapping time problem about IPTV service, and we also addressed network performance and user management. We tested our solution in the overlay multicast testbed and analyzed the results of test.

Real-time u-LBS system for mobile vehicle in 3G networks

Heemin Kim; Jungwook Song; Miradham Kamilov; Sunyoung Han

Internet technologies are turning into a fusion of various technologies (architecture, machinery, robotics, traffic, etc). Among these fusion of different technologies, LBS (Location Based Service) is an area where research integrates with every other sectors. The purpose of the LBS system is to provide real-time location information. Such information not only tells the user his own location but also information about the surroundings. This technology and related studies are most commonly dealt with by navigation systems for cars. However, the current LBS service for cars is only service information sent one-way by the server and does not deal with real-time information. However, a problem with the current system is that it does not take full advantage of the LBS system, which is accurate location information, and mobile devices. The goal of this study was to develop an LBS system superior than the current LBS service through actual road tests and to develop a real-time u-LBS system using HSDPA and Wibro Technology of the 3G Network.

Liu Jing; Jungwook Song; Heemin Kim; Boyoung Rhee; Sunyoung Han

Mobile IPv6 has several defects such as overloading of nodes, loss of wireless signals, packet loss, movement problem and so forth. In this paper, we proposed a scheme to deal with F-HMIPv6 (Fast-Hierarchical Mobile IPv6) handover packet loss. With our scheme, we use the Multi-Session technology which connects among NAR, PAR and MAP to reduce the data losing during MN handover time. Data losing can be reduced mostly with our scheme.

Cross-Correlated FEC Scheme for Multimedia Streaming over Wireless LAN

Eunyong Park; Sunyoung Han; Heemin Kim; Kiwon Son

The recent video standards like MPEG-4 are generally vulnerable to the packet loss because they achieve high compression ratios by complex calculation of preceding and succeeding frames. But, in the wireless channel, errors tend to occur in burst due to the intrinsic wireless link characteristics. Therefore, an efficient error control mechanism for multimedia streaming is necessary. In this paper, we propose a novel CC-FEC (Cross-correlated Forwarding Error Correction) scheme robust against burst error and suitable for multimedia streaming over the WLAN. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the interleaving and the multi-dimensional FEC schemes. We verify our schemes superior performance than other FEC schemes through simulation.

Many countries are looking for ways to fight the forest fire at early stage using sensor network by integrating IT technologies. Studies are conducted in fire-related sensor network field in line with those changes, and the studies are broadly divided into efficient processing of fire data between sensor nodes and sensor network energy efficiency in case of fire. Thus, this study forms multi-layer cluster hierarchy dynamically according to the direction of fire spreading on cluster-based network hierarchy appropriate for Fire-Monitoring, and intends to propose Energy-efficient Fire Monitoring Protocol that can reduce energy consumption by the entire sensor network by performing efficient transmission of fire data.
