The present study deals with the new polymer coating systems for prevention from railway accidents due to ice and snow accretion. The new polymer coatings developed for this purpose are a siliconemacromer-grafted fluorocarbon polymer(#10) and poly-perfluoroalkyl acrylate containing hydrophobic filler (#20). For the evaluation of surface properties of these materials the free surface energy and adhesive strength of ice and snow against them comparing with a new water-repellent clothes were measured. Furthermore, wind tunnel test was carried out and discussed the relationship between these results and surface properties. Applications of these systems to the railway use, i.e. to the pantograph, trolley wire and car body were tried.
