The social wasps are predators of many insect species and the study of their preys can reveal the potential of these natural enemies in biological control programs. A total of 240h of collections of preys in 32 nests of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) was carried on in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from March 2000 to February 2001. The preys captured by P. versicolor were mainly those from the orders Lepidoptera (95.4%) and Coleoptera (1.1%) while 3.4% of them were not identified. Chlosyne lacinia saundersii Doubleday & Hewitson (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) was the most collected prey (13.5%). The total of 4,015 preys was estimated to be captured per colony of P. versicolor during one year. The species can be used in integrated pest management of herbivorous insects, especially defoliating caterpillars.

The avian malaria caused by Plasmodium juxtanucleare in Gallus gallus, is a tipical plasmodiose from Brazilian gallinaceous. This disease can causes morbidy and mortality in its vertebrate hosts. This work was conducted at Boa Vista farm, Municipality of Santa Barbara do Tugurio, Minas Gerais, Brazil and the ours objectives were to evaluate the hight prevalence found in previous studies and to accompany the variation of the erytrocytic forms during one year. The bloods smears, dyed with Giemsa were examined in microscopy immersion. Twenty five half-breed fowls were accompany duting one year, monthly (from November/00 to May/01) and biweekly (from June/01 to October/01). The erytrocytic forms were registered and quantified by the observation of 100 microscopic fields. Was verified a prevalence of 100% by P. juxtanuclerare, but there wasn’t statistics correlation between the increase of the erytrocytic forms during the year. The trophozoites were the more abundant form found in this studie.

Knowing the importance of participation by insects at cadaverous decomposition processes, and the limited use of the family Formicidae in criminal investigations, this study aims to record the foraging activity of four genera of ants in carcasses of birds and mammals. Observations occurred accidentally in two locations in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In total, seven species of ants foraging in eight vertebrate carcasses were recorded. In addition, the study reported for the first time the presence of Wasmannia in carcasses in Brazil.
