Scanning electron microscope studies on four species of Ulota from AustraliaThis paper is one of a selection of papers published as part of the special Schofield Gedenkschrift.

Helen P. Ramsay

Ulota species are difficult to separate to species level on leaf characters alone. In this study, scanning electron microscopy of habit and leaves, capsules, peristomes, and spores proved useful in separating four Australian species. Details of capsule and peristome, particularly distinctive features of the endostome, are shown.

Ramsay. Helen P.I & Streimann. H2 (ISchool of Botany. University of New South Wales. Kensington. N.S.W Australia 2033; 2Herbarium. National Botanic Gardens. Canberra A.C.T Australia 2601). Telopea 2(5): 559-574. The Australian Capital Territory is geographically located on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. The area is physiographically and climatically diverse with alluvial terrain to high ridges reaching 1900 m. More than 180 species from 39 families and their distribution within the A.C.T. are recorded. Data on distribution in other regions ofN.S.W. and in other Australian states are also given. Affinities are mainly with temperate mosses of southern Australia.

Chromosome numbers in some mosses from western Canada

Helen P. Ramsay

Chromosome numbers are reported for six moss species from western Canada, four from British Columbia, two from Alberta. These give data on chromosome numbers from new localities in Canada for populations of five species and the first record for Kiaeria starkei from Canada. Chromosome numbers reported are n = 13, Grimmia afftnis; n = 14, Kiaeria starkei; n = 14 (13 + m), Dicranum scoparium; n = 20, Bryum pseudotriquetrum; n = 11, Ptilium crista-castrensis; and n = 6, Hypnum circinale.
