Nicotine and cotinine in the amniotic fluid of smokers in the second trimester of pregnancy.

Helen Van Vunakis; John J. Langone; Aubrey Milunsky

Abstract Amniotic fluid samples were analyzed for nicotine and for one of its major metabolites, cotinine, by radioimmunoassay procedures. Of the 37 samples collected from smokers, 22 contained nicotine in concentrations ranging up to 31 ng. per milliliter and 33 contained cotinine in concentrations ranging up to 129 ng. per milliliter. These compounds were not detected in fluid from 63 nonsmokers.
