Development of Advanced Assistance Systems for Intersection Safety

M. Hopstock; Dirk Ehmanns; Helmut Spannheimer

The major task of the project InterSafe, which is funded by the European Commission, is to reduce the number of accidents in intersection scenarios. In order to solve this problem, the BMW Group chose a top-down approach to develop advanced safety systems for intersections. The relevant scenarios of turning, crossing and ignoring traffic lights were identified by the analysis of intersection accidents. Based on this, the controller will be developed within the realistic environment of the BMW Group dynamic driving simulator. This allows determining the requirements for the surveillance systems in parallel to the development of the other components such as the Human-Machine-Interface and the controller algorithm. Furthermore, the virtual environment allows the evaluation process to occur with real test drivers in critical situations without endangering them. The results of the project will be an assistance system to enhance safety at intersections.

Integrierte Längs- und Querf;uhrung

Dirk Ehmanns; Peter Zahn; Helmut Spannheimer; Raymond Freymann

Infrasound and low frequency noise in the passenger compartment of vehicles

Helmut Spannheimer; Raymond Freymann

The acoustic response determined in the passenger compartment of a vehicle is characterized by resonances in the infrasound and low frequency range. A simple mathematical model is derived allowing the numerical identification of the related low frequency acoustic eigenmodes. The numerically obtained results are verified on the basis of experimental investigations.

Integrated longitudinal and lateral guidance control

Dirk Ehmanns; Peter Zahn; Helmut Spannheimer; Raymond Freymann

The main focus of a lateral control assistance system is the integration of various driver assistance functions to form an integrated overall system. The applications presented follow the BMW Group’s ConnectedDrive concept which supports the driver by means of assistance systems. However, the driver continues to be responsible for the control of the vehicle. The tasks to be resolved in the integration of sub-systems, such as e.g. the interpretation of situations, are illustrated using the example of lane changing assistance.
