Stapedotomy Piston Diameter – Is Bigger Better?

Erik Teig; Henrik H. Lindeman

Introduction: An important question, which confronts every otosclerosis surgeon, is which type of stapes prosthesis should be chosen. A wide variety of prostheses with different shapes, material and shaft diameters is commercially available. This paper addresses the importance of the piston shaft diameter. Patients and Material: In this retrospective study of 225 consecutive stapedotomies performed in the period 1981–1998, prostheses with a diameter of 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm have been compared. Results: Bigger pistons give better hearing results for frequencies up to and including 2 kHz.

Effect of Human Fibrin Adhesive on the Ear An Electrophysiological Study of Auditory Function in the Guinea Pig Correlated to Light and Electron Microscopy of Middle Ear Mucosa and Inner Ear Structures

Svein Mjøen; Henrik H. Lindeman; Gisle Djupesland; Barbara Schüler; Arne Sundby; Fredrik Skjørten

The effect of human fibrin adhesive applied to the middle ear has been studied in guinea pig. Auditory function was measured using acoustically evoked brainstem responses. Middle and inner ear structures were studied with light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A transitory conductive hearing loss was observed, but after 8 weeks the auditory function appeared normal. Microscopy of the middle and inner ear failed to show any tissue damage.

SOME HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS OF THE INCUS AND STAPES WITH ESPECIAL REGARD TO THEIR VASCULARIZATION.

Henrik H. Lindeman

On account of the frequent discovery of degenerative phenomena of the long process of the incus, especially in cases of chronic otitis, it is presumed that this degeneration is caused by nutritive failure due to local vascular disease.Histological examinations of the incus and stapes with serial sections have been made with the particular intention of demonstrating the vascularization of these bones.
