Primary malignant melanoma of the tongue. A case report and review of the literature

A case report of primary melanoma of the dorsum of the tongue is presented with histological documentation of junctional changes in the epithelium. Review of the literature revealed only 3 previously reported cases of melanoma occurring in this location.

A retrospective study of a head and neck cancer control program

The care and management of patients who develop cancers of the head and neck frequently require the interrelated knowledge and skills of several medical disciplines. When it is possible to assemble an interested group of specialists to focus upon every patient, professional standards are under constant peer review, the quality of patient care is enhanced, continuing education is stimulated, and clinical research is encouraged. The experience of patients who were treated in an interdisciplinary program was summarized and the end results were assessed. The anatomical site of origin of the tumor, as well as the extent of disease, were closely associated with survival experience. The survival experience of patients with tumors originating in the tongue, mouth, and pharynx was better than expected. Survival was equal to that expected for tumors of the larynx, salivary glands, and thyroid gland, and lower than expected for cancers of the lip.
