WHEREAS, The United States of America is now engaged on a great program of preparation for national defense, involving not only the material aspects of military, industrial, and economic defense, but also the intellectual and moral strengthening of our people; and WHEREAS, this program also includes a renewed appreciation of the importance of closer ties with Latin America, particularly in the cultural field; and WHEREAS, knowledge of foreign languages is not only of practical usefulness in all these aspects of preparation for national defense, but is the obvious first step in any program for the improvement of cultural relations; now therefore be it

Aids to the Study of Spanish

The subject assigned to me has two advantages: first, the title is broad enough to permit discussion of almost anything under t?e Hispanic sun; and second, the, time at my.dlsposal permits mention only of those .thl~gs which seem of sufficient interest to justify their inclusion. My suggestions will ther~fore necessarily be limited in range and relatlve~y few in number. Some of them, moreover, Will represent personal opinions, which you may be unable to accept; and not all, I must confess, will be severely practical. NEED OF PRELIMINARY TRAINING IN ENGLISH
