Tetrahedron Letters | 1981

Synthesis of - and -2,4-dibenzylidine-1,3-ditelluretan from sodium phenyl acetylide and tellurium metal; a reinvestigation and structure proof

Steven L. Bender; Neil F. Haley; Henry R. Luss

Abstract Reaction of sodium phenyl acetylide with tellurium metal and subsequent protonation yields the title compounds, rather than a 1,3-ditellurole as recently reported.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1982

Synthesis of -1,2-diphenyl-3,4-bis[4-(2,6-diphenyl-4- pyranylidenyl)]cyclobutane: correction and structure proof

Jeffrey J. Doney; Chin H. Chen; Henry R. Luss

Abstract The reaction of phenyl lithium acetylide ( 2 ) with 2,6-diphenylpyrylium perchlorate ( 1 ) is solvent dependent. With diethyl ether as solvent, the isolated product differed from that previously reported and is reassingned as 2,6-diphenyl-4-phenylacetylenyl-4 H -pyran ( 5 ). On the other hand, in THF the title compound ( 6 ) was obtained; its structure confirmed by single-crystal x-ray crystallography.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1981

Synthesis of 1-acyloxyindolizines. Correction of a structure misassignment

Donald H. Wadsworth; Steven L. Bender; Douglas L. Smith; Henry R. Luss

Abstract The assignment by Lown of a 3-acyloxyindolizine structure to the product of the reaction of diphenylcyclopropenone and pyridine is shown to be in error. Both 1- and 3-acyloxyindolizines were prepared and their structures established by X-ray analysis.

Unique intramolecular exciplex luminescent behaviour of 9-(2-diethylaminomehylphenyl)anthracene in rigid media

Franklin D. Saeva; Henry R. Luss; Peter A. Martic

9-(2-Diethylaminomethylphenyl)anthracene exhibits exciplex luminescent behaviour in solution, in a rigid polymer film, and in the solid state, owing to the restricted conformation of the phenylanthracene ring system as indicated from its X-ray crystal structure.
