Poliomyelitis Virus in the Human Oro-pharynx.

Howard A. Howe; Herbert A. Wenner; David Bodian; Kenneth F. Maxcy

Summary Throat swabs were taken from 14 cases of human poliomyelitis during the first week of the disease. Seven of these (50%) were found to contain active virus.

On the Alleged Antigenic Relation between ECHO Virus Types 29 and 32.

Leon Rosen; Abbas M. Behbehani; Paul Kamitsuka; Jerome Kern; Edwin H. Lennette; Joseph L. Melnick; Nathalie J. Schmidt; Herbert A. Wenner

Discussion and summary The data presented here indicate clearly that the previously reported antigenic relationship between ECHO types 29 and 32 was the result of working with a mixture of the viruses in question. No antigenic relationship between these types was detected by tube neutralization, plaque-reduction, or hemagglutination-inhibition tests when “purified” reagents were employed.

Effect of H ion concentration on eluting poliomyelitis virus from cotton fiber.

Herbert A. Wenner

Summary A method is reported for eluting the Lansing strain of poliomyelitis virus from cotton swabs. This virus is eluted best from cotton when the diluent is alkaline at pH 8.0. To obtain optimal mortality (morbidity) rates the eluate should be made acid (pH 4.6, etc.) before it is inoculated into mice.
