The research assessed the efficacy of encounter and marathon group experiences in inducing changes in perception of self and others and in personal and interpersonal dimensions of psychological functioning. Formulation and changes in attitudes toward the group were examined as well. Objective tests were administered to E and C groups consisting of graduate students in psychology. Forced-choice peer-nomination rating forms and attitude questionnaires were administered at various points in the course of the group to the E group. Peer-nomination data indicated Ss became more accurate in predicting how group members viewed them but did not change their self-perceptions in alignment with group ratings.

It was hypothesized that the uniform T-score procedure was one possible source of observed differences between the MMPI-2 T scores and the MMPI T scores. MMPI-2 linear T scores were computed for a sample of 200 psychiatric outpatients whose MMPI-2 and MMPI T scores had been determined at the same point in time. Differences created by the uniform technique were slight and did not exceed 1.2 T-score points. Contrary to hypothesis, the uniform T-score procedure reduced the differences between mean MMPI-2 T-scores and the MMPI T scores on 12 of the 16 scales. These data suggest that the differences between the MMPI and MMPI-2 T scores are mainly due to differences between the normative samples

This research examined the effects of self-directed audio-tape encounter-group experiences on dimensions of self/ideal-self-congruence, creativity and interpersonal need fulfillment. The Semantic Differential, Barron-Welsh Art Scale and the FIRO-B were administered to groups of college students. The audio-tape procedure was effective and results supported the hypotheses which predicted that encounter relative to control Ss would achieve a higher congruence between their self- and ideal-self-concepts, seek more complex and imaginative solutions to problems, and become more self-directing in a prototypical interpersonal situation.

The attitudes of a national sample of 774 clinical psychologists, 791 psychiatric social workers, and 581 psychiatrists were sampled in a closed-ended survey research format to determine: (a) the relative degree of communality there is among members of the mental health team in the dispositional judgments they render; and (b) whether differential criteria are employed for placing a child patient in individual, group, or conjoint family therapy, or terminating from each of these modalities. 1200 Ss were sampled; rates were 41.0% and 39.3% respectively. Members of the mental health team strongly agree about the differential relevance of specific criteria for each decision-making condition. Variations in interdisciplinary frames of reference of respondents tended not to influence placement in or termination from the treatment modalities in question.
