Bees are considered the main pollinators in natural and agricultural environments. Chemical elements from honey and pollen have been used for monitoring the environment, the health of bees and the quality of their products. Nevertheless, there are not many studies on honey and pollen of native Brazilian bees. The goal of this work was to determine important chemical elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Yb) along with As, Bi, Cd, Pb, Se and In, in honey and pollen of native Brazilian bees, assessing analytical interferences from the matrix. A proposed analytical method was developed for these elements by quadrupole ICP-MS. Matrix effect was verified in honey matrix in the quantification of As, Bi and Dy; and in pollen matrix for Bi, Cd, Ce, Gd, La, Pb and Sc. The quality of the method was considered satisfactory taking into consideration the recovery rate of each element in the spiked solutions: honey matrix (91.6-103.9%) and pollen matrix (94.1-115.6%). The quantification limits of the method ranged between 0.00041 and 10.3μgL-1 for honey and 0.00041-0.095μgL-1 for pollen. The results demonstrate that the method is accurate, precise and suitable.

The Quadrilatero Ferrifero region, in the State of Minas Gerais, became internationally known due to the exploitation of gold in the eighteenth century. In this paper, we will present background values for arsenic in alluvial sediments from areas that were heavily affected by the exploitation of gold in the past, in the Carmo River Basin. The analyses of the facies succession of the alluvial profiles were carried out in the sedimentary deposits of flood plains, cutbank and alluvial terraces; this being the foundation for obtaining the arsenic background in the facies of the channel and flood plains. From the knowledge of the background obtained by the statistical method, and based on the construction of cumulative frequency curves on a linear scale, geochemical maps were generated in the SIG system. The acquisition of the background values and the geochemical map for arsenic in the Carmo River Basin, representing areas with anomalous concentrations of this element, are essential for the diagnosis and environmental planning of a mining district potentially contaminated by arsenic.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the natural degradation of the leachate organic fraction from the Belo Horizonte landfill on groundwater chemical evolution. The work focused on the modifications introduced by redox reactions in the presence of terminal electron acceptors. Twenty-one sampling points distributed along 13 monitoring wells were selected for the analysis of the chemical indicators of interest (TDS, SO4−2, Fe+2, Ba, pH and Eh). The behaviour of the variables involved in the alteration of the water quality was assessed by the spatial distribution of target parameters, elaboration of redox diagrams and chemical modelling that focused on the determination of mineral saturation indexes. The study showed a trend toward pyrite precipitation, which leads to the removal of chemical species such as divalent iron and sulphur as sulphide from the system. This removal disturbs the chemical equilibrium, typically by moving the reactions to replenish the sulphate concentration present in the groundwater. This process occurs primarily through the dissolution of compounds that have sulphate in their chemical composition, such as barite, suggesting that part of the barium concentration in the subsurface can be of geogenic origin. This study demonstrated the importance of knowing the nature of the geochemical processes in groundwater contaminated by urban solid waste.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of mining on the geochemical composition of the alluvial sediments of the Gualaxo do Norte River Basin, located in the eastern-southeastern portion of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The analysis of the sedimentological succession was carried out using 16 stratigraphic sections (cutbanks and alluvial terraces) and analysis of 111 sediment samples for major- and trace-elements by ICP-OES. The stratigraphic analysis revealed the deposition history of the collected sediments. Anomalous concentrations of certain elements such as As and Pb were found, which are associated with stratigraphic facies with evidences of gold artisanal mining, and Fe anomalies associated with iron ore mining. The classification of the sections was possible by means of principal component analysis. From the sediment characteristics, three groups were identified: (1) those influenced by iron ore mining and gold artisanal mining; (2) those influenced by iron ore mining and (3) those with no influence of human activities.

Ecosystems on cangas (duricrust) present considerable heterogeneity of habitats due to microtopographic variations, soil accumulation and a variety of plant functional groups. Therefore, spatial and temporal ecosystem processes such as litterfall are to be expected to be large, and the absence of a level of productivity represents all the facets of iron-rich landscapes. We investigated litterfall in a iron-rich rock complex in the Iron Quadrangle of Brazil, with habitats formed on different evolutionary stages of the soil, resulting in a gradient of biomass, canopy cover and community structure. The measurements were made in open field areas, dominated by herb-shrub vegetation and interspersed with islands of dense vegetation in which there were individual trees, as well as in areas of semideciduous forest. The litterfall, especially that of leaf litter, followed the gradient of woody cover and was approximately two times greater in the forest formation. However, the spatial and temporal variations in deposition were greatest in the herb-shrub areas and least in the semideciduous forest area, intermediate values being obtained for the tree island areas. The peaks in litterfall also varied among habitats, occurring in some periods of the rainy season and during the transition from rainy to dry in the herb-shrub and tree island areas, whereas they occurred at the end of the dry season in the semideciduous forest area. The results show significant differences in the patterns of litterfall among different physiognomies within the same iron-rich rock complex, indicating the need for expanded studies, focusing on the flow of matter and energy in such environments.

A regional study on the arsenic concentration in surface waters and stream sediments, with a density of one sample every 13 km2, was carried out for the first time in the Quadrilatero Ferrifero (Brazil). The region was divided into 3rd order catchment basins, in which 512 areas were sampled. The arsenic concentration was determined in waters and stream sediments after partial digestion with the aid of ICP-OES. The arsenic values found in surface waters ranged from 57.70 to 414 µg.L-1, while for stream sediments, arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.63 to 1691 mg.kg-1, and from the 512 sampling points, 135 (26%) had arsenic concentrations above the limit of detection, which was 0.63 mg.kg-1. It was also found that 106 3rd order catchment basins had values above the third quartile, (5.09 mg.kg-1). The results show that high concentrations of this element are strongly related to the presence of Nova Lima rocks that contain minerals rich in arsenic. However, the anthropogenic influence in such high concentrations cannot be ruled out, as the region has a history of over 300 years of gold mining.

Around the Ouro Preto region, State of Minas Gerais Brazil, there is a significant presence of topaz prospecting. This activity is characterized by the use of rudimentary techniques without any tailing disposal control. Among the environmental impacts are: deforestation, tailing generation and accumulation, introduction of suspended fine particulate matter to the water and silting up of streams. In this work a hydrochemical study was carried out aiming to assess the water quality of the Ponte River and its tributaries. Water samples were analyzed for pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, turbidity, alkalinity, chloride, sulfate, metals (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Sc, Sr, Ti, V, Y and Zn) and suspended particulate matter. The results show that the main problem in the area is the high turbidity values, which are associated with the presence of suspended solids introduced by the prospecting activity (reaching a concentration of up to 2.9 g.L-1). This fact represents an important facto, since it demonstrates that metals are being deposited in the aquatic atmosphere.

Banded iron formations are important providers of information about the evolution of the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere of the Earth. This study gathers data from the geochemical investigation of major, minor and trace elements (including rare earth elements) of the siliceous, amphibolitic and magnetitic types of itabirite from the Caue Formation, sampled in the Serra Azul region (Quadrilatero Ferrifero). Observing the trace elements described as tracers of detrital contamination can be inferred that the magnetitic itabirite has the highest contamination and that the siliceous type has the lowest one. Although there are differences in the total sum of REE in the three itabirite types of Serra Azul, there are no discrepancies in the REE spectrum of each type. The itabirite types have as common characteristics in their REE spectrum: i) positive Eu anomalies (Planavsky et al., 2010); ii) HREE enrichment in relation to the LREE; iii) ratios of (Sm/Yb) SN 1 (Bau & Moller, 1993). The magnetitic and the siliceous itabirites had positive Y anomalies, a common characteristic that appeared in some amphibolitic samples. On the other hand, the other amphibolitic samples had negative Y anomalies.
