Early diagnosis of oral cancer.

Survival rates for oral cancer are very poor, at approximately 50% overall, and have not improved markedly in recent decades despite advances in therapeutic interventions. Detecting oral cancer at an early stage is believed to be the most effective means of reducing rates of death, morbidity and disfigurement from this disease. Tobacco and alcohol consumption and pre-malign lesions are the most common aetiological factors. The proportion of patients presenting with oral cancer at an advanced stage is troubling. Early diagnosis is the most effective way of reducing the individual burden of the disease, decreasing morbidity and mortality and improving quality of life. For early diagnosis, healthcare providers should perform oral cancer examinations as part of their patient care regime, and need to be knowledgeable about early signs of oral carcinoma. Oral cancer awareness among the public should also be improved.

Maxillary Canine Transposition to Incisor Site: A Rare Condition

Hakan Türkkahraman; Mözgür Sayin; Hh Yilmaz

Tooth transposition is defined as positional interchange of 2 adjacent teeth within the same quadrant. The incidence has been reported as about 0.4%, and the maxillary permanent canine has been reported as the tooth most frequently involved. Several etiologic factors like genetics, interchange in position of the developing tooth buds, trauma, mechanical interferences, and early loss of incisors have been associated with tooth transposition. Articles in the literature report various kinds of transpositions, but there are only a few reported cases of transposition of the maxillary canine to central incisor site. This kind of transposition has been suggested as resulting primarily by opportunistic canine migration into the space left from an early lost central incisor. However, there are only 2 long-term roentgenographic follow-up studies documenting maxillary canine migration and substantiating this hypothesis. This report shows 2 cases of this rare condition, with 1 of them documented with long-term records.

ObjectivesThe aims of this study are to evaluate the dentofacial morphology of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to compare the morphological data with those of healthy age- and sex-matched control subjects.MethodsTwenty-seven RA patients (mean age, 45.77u2009±u20098.64xa0years) and 25 healthy subjects (mean age, 44.80u2009±u20098.24xa0years) participated in this prospective study. Clinical and functional evaluations of the RA patients were assessed. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein level, rheumatoid factor level, and anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPA) titers of RA patients were determined, and DAS28 scores were calculated. Linear and angular measurements were performed on cephalometric tracings and condylar erosion was evaluated on lateral panoramic radiographs. Statistical comparison of the two groups was performed with an independent samples t test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between the clinical and laboratory parameters.ResultsBased on DAS28 scores, no patient with RA was in the remission period, 3 patients had low, 23 had medium, and 1 had high disease activity. Sixteen (59.26xa0%) patients with RA had positive ACPA titers. Lateral cephalometric radiographs revealed statistically significant difference between the two groups for the measurement of U1–NA (millimeter; pu2009=u20090.047), U1–NA (degrees; pu2009=u20090.031), L1–NB (degrees; pu2009=u20090.030), IMPA (L1–MP; pu2009=u20090.001), interincisal angle (U1–L1; degrees; pu2009=u20090.022) and midface length (Co–A; millimeter; pu2009=u20090.033). A significant positive linear correlation was found between disease duration time and DAS28 scores (ru2009=u20090.066, pu2009=u20090.040).ConclusionsDentoalveolar effects of RA on dentofacial morphology are more significant than the skeletal effects. Future studies with larger sample sizes are required to evaluate the exact effects of RA on dentofacial morphology.Clinical relevanceClinicians should consider the fact that RA-associated dentoalveolar changes can be observed and may affect the orthodontic treatment process.

Material and Methods: The information regarding oral mucosal conditions was obtained from interviews of 42 patients. Results: The incidence of oral mucosal conditions was 92,9%. The incidence of oral mucosal conditions indicated a significant increase with advancing age. Varices (n:15), fissured tongue (n:13) and natrophic tongue papillae (n:13) were the three most common conditions; and the incidence increased withage. Conclusion: The current results support those of other investigators in that the presence of oral mucosal conditions in elderly population is related to age and sex. nKey words: Elderly, oral mucosal condition, prevalence

Bu calismada 26 ve 27 yaslarindaki iki kadin hastadan alinan panoramik radyograflarda osteoporozun erken belirtileri (inferior ve angular mandibular kortekste incelme, trabekuler yapida degisiklik) gozlenerek, kemik mineral yogunlugu ve icerigi olcumleri istendi. Sonuc olarak, bu iki olguda panoramik radyograflarin osteoporoz tanisinda yararli n nolabilecegi ve genc yastaki insanlarda bile erken taniya yardimci olabilecegi gosterilmistir. Diagnosis of osteoporosis on panoramic radiographs of two young women n n(case report) n nOsteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease that has a high morbidity-mortality rate and requires expensive treatment. The clinical diagnosis of this disease is fractures with minor trauma in bones due to a reduction in bone mineral density. Early indicators of osteoporosis (thinning in inferior and angular mandibular cortex, changes in the trabecular architecture) were determined on panoramic radiographs of 26 and 27 years old female patients. Analyses of bone mineral density and bone mineral content were performed. The results were in concordance with osteoporosis. It is concluded that panoramic radiographs may be useful in early diagnosis of osteoporosis even in younger patients. Besides, these two cases revealed that dentists can play an important role in early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in patients. n n n nKey words: Osteoporosis, Panoramic Radiography, Mandibular Cortex
