A novel wavelength interleaving filter (interleaver) has been demonstrated with Fourier transform-based Mach Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). The interleaver works as two independent 1/spl times/2 interleavers by sharing their delay lines and couplers.

Waveguide interleaving filters

Optical Interleaving filters are attractive components in WDM systems especially narrower than 100GHz channel spacing system. Several types of interleaving filters have been proposed and realized. An interleaving filter is required to have the Box-like characteristics such as the periodic response, flat-passband, low insertion loss and low crosstalk. In addition, low chromatic dispersion (CD) is indispensable for DWDM systems. We focus on planar lightwave circuit interleaving filters. In this paper, we present interleaving filters with a tandem configuration of Fourier transform-based MZIs. The circuit using PLC technique is fabricated with high index contrast waveguides of Δ1.5%. We also have demonstrated monolithically integrated 1×4 (50-200GHz) interleaving filters and arrayed waveguide gratings(AWGs) with 200GHz-channel spacing suitable for interleaving WDM system.

Summary form only given. In summary, a novel switchable drop filter has been proposed and demonstrated with photoinduced Bragg grating on a silica-based waveguide with the heater power consumption of 0.124 W (a driving current is 60 mA). Good switching responses were obtained by 0.4-nm shifts of Bragg wavelength.

Hideki Nounen; Hideaki Arai; Takafumi Chiba; Satoshi Takasugi; Hisato Uetsuka

We have investigated reliability of an interleaving filter, which consists of Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a silica planar lightwave circuit. This device is very stable and robust enough to be used over 25 years.
