Abstract Magnetic properties of GdPd 2 Al 3 single-crystalline samples where Gd 3+ ions form the triangular lattice have been studied by high field magnetization measurements. Large magnetic anisotropic features were observed in the ordered state in spite of the 8 S 7/2 state for Gd 3+ ions. These anomalous properties of GdPd 2 Al 3 are discussed in terms of a two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

Abstract The 7Li and 19F NMR have been performed in the single crystal of the lithium fluoride, BaLiF3 with a cubic structure in order to examine the basic requirements for crystal NMR quantum computing devices. The angular dependences of the NMR line widths were explained by the lattice-sum of nuclear dipole fields. We find that magic angles are quite effective in this crystal structure to diminish the nuclear dipole fields from the nearest neighbor sites, enabling us to treat the nuclei as “isolated”. We propose using this feature to create low dimensional nuclear spin networks in crystals.

The magnetic properties of mangan-vanadium antimonate solid solution (Mn 1-x V x )Sb 2 O 4 (x = 0 to 0.6) with the tetragonal TX 2 O 4 structure (T = Pb 4+ , Sn 4+ ; X = Pb 2+ or T = Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ ; X = Sb 3+ , As 3+ ) were investigated. Magnetic measurements on the polycrystalline specimens have shown that characteristic ferromagnetic behavior appears in the case that x is larger than 0.1, whereas the final compound MnSb 2 O 4 is an antiferromagnet with the Neel temperature T N = 60.5 K. The magnetic isotherms of the solid solution at low temperatures show ferromagnetic jumps at low fields but do not tend to saturate up to 5 T. The zero-field cooling magnetic susceptibility has a maximum at T c = 57 K, which is independent of both the vanadium concentration x and the frequencies of the applied external fields.

Abstract Ternary compound Ce3PbC has a simple face-centered cubic CaTiO3-type structure. We found that Ce3PbC undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetic state at T N =8.4 K and shows an another transition at T t =5.8 K . Magnetization process exhibits multi-step metamagnetic transitions at T=1.5 K . The observation of inelastic neutron experiments suggest that the crystalline electric field (CEF) ground state can be consider to be a doublet. This results imply that the Ce sites are influenced by tetragonal CEF interaction, even though the crystal structure is cubic. We expect that such CEF configuration plays an important role in the behavior of multi-step metamagnetic transitions.
