We propose a technique for combining devices to create a more flexible context-aware service system. This system integrates devices that are embedded or distributed in the users environment and are networked with each other. The system for providing context-aware services locates and selects devices appropriate to the users context. When the context changes while the service is being provided, devices for that service can be partially reconfigured without resetting all the parameters. We have verified the effectiveness of our technique in a prototype implementation.

There is an increasing demand to reduce cost and shorten the development period. Though an automation system consists of sub-systems, each sub-system is large. Therefore, the development of such a system is complex. In addition, an automation system, in which there are a wide variety of object requests, may not achieve the processing performance of the target depending on the combination and arrangement method of the sub-systems. Thus, it is important to design appropriate configuration. We propose a design support method using modelbased simulation. This method predicts total system performance by extracting the constraints arising from the system configuration and patterning the various input data. We appliedthis method to the design of configurations of embedded system composed of multiple processing sub-systems. In the result, the most reasonable configuration was designed from two patterns of system configuration.

Recently, in the fields such as power, transportation and industry, it is strongly required to simplify and speed up improvement and rebuilding of systems, in order to promote efficiency of business in the whole company that includes field systems, control systems and enterprise systems, and in other to cope quickly with changes of a business environments. In order to solve the above, in this paper, we describe the concept and architecture of “Intermediating data field” and the platform technique based on the architecture for integrating seamlessly from field equipments to enterprise systems, and for simplifying to expand ranges of a system and update them. In addition we describe examples of applying our platform technique to an industrial system.

In ubiquitous computing, it is said that services are provided anytime, anywhere, and for anyone. Moreover, context-aware services are expected. One issue in providing a context-aware service is the connection of heterogeneous resources (hardware devices and software components) that are embedded or distributed in the surrounding environment and networked with each other. Another issue is deciding from where or from which scopes to detect and select suitable resources. An object model named Super Distributed Objects (SDO)is proposed for a uniform description of resources and a technique of platform-independent management of domainsfor resources based on the SDO model.
