Research on Selenium and its Alloys. (III)

Tomo-o Satô; Hideo Kaneko

For a fundamental datum for refining crude Se by distillation, the vapour pressure of Se alloys containing another element was determined with the following results: (a) The vapour pressure of Se-Sn and Se-Bi alloys decreases with the increase of Sn or Bi content, but each system has a monovariant range in its isobaric and isothermal diagram. (b) The isobar and isotherm of Se-Te alloy show the minimum and maximum respectively, therefore separation of Te by distillation is difficult. (c) Se-Hg alloy is difficult to be separated due to high vapour pressure of the intermetallic compound (Hg. Se) which exists in this system. (d) The vapour pressure of Se-S alloy increases monotonously with increasing of S content. (e) Se-Cd alloy contains the intermetallic compound (Se•Cd) having low vapour pressure, so that it is possible to remove Cd from Se by distillation. Se-Zn alloy is similar to Se-Cd alloy. (f) Spectrographic examination of distillated Se was also carried out.

On the Volume Shrinkage due to Solidification of Cadmium Bearing Alloys

Tomo-o Satô; Hideo Kaneko

The measurement of the volume shrinkage due to solidification of 67 kinds of Cd base bearing alloys, such as Cd-Ni, Cd-Ag, Cd-Cu, Cd-Hg, Cd-Ag-Cu, Cd-Ni-Hg, Cd-Ni-Cu and Cd-Hg-Cu, was carried out. The additional elements in these alloys varied from 1 to 10%. The specific volume of melt and solid of these alloys at various temperatures was measured by means of a specially designed pycnometer made of pyrex glass and also a by dilatometer, and the temperature of beginning and ending of the solidification was determined by thermal analysis, From these results, the volume shrinkage due to solidificatien was calculated. Following alloys showed low volume shrinkage. _??_
