Evaluation of temperature and properties at interface of AISI 1040 steels joined by friction welding

Hilmi Kuscu; İsmail Becenen; Mumin Sahin

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate temperature and properties at interface of AISI 1040 steels joined by friction welding.Design/methodology/approach – In this study, AISI 1040 medium carbon steel was used in the experiments. Firstly, optimum parameters of the friction welding were obtained by using a statistical analysis. Later, the microstructures of the heat‐affected zone are presented along with micro hardness profiles for the joints. Then, the temperature distributions are experimentally obtained in the interface of the joints that is formed during the friction welding of 1040 steels with the same geometry. This study was carried out by using thermocouples at different locations of the joint‐interface. The results obtained were compared with previous studies and some comments were made about them.Findings – It was discovered that temperature had a substantial effect on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the material.Research limitations/implications – The maximum temperatu...

Design and manufacture of automated controlled test machine detecting braking characteristic of brake lining in vehicles

Mustafa Timur; Hilmi Kuscu; Hayrettin Toylan

This study has been carried out in order to measure friction coefficient of friction materials used in autos through computer program. Variants such as speed, temperature, and pressure have been discussed and the effect of these variants on friction materials of autos. Variants such as speed, temperature, and pressure resulting from various effects in autos have been discussed, the effects of these variants on friction materials have been examined and their friction coefficients have been detected. In the test device whose manufacturing has been completed, temperature value between surface of brake lining and disc used during tests a machinery has been prepared in a way that temperature values are 0–400 ℃, speed values are 0–1400 rev/min, pressure values are 0–1.05 Mpa. In consideration of these dates, it has become possible to constitute friction coefficient–temperature, friction–time and temperature–time diagrams. By benefiting from the tests to be performed through friction coefficient test device, enhancement or progress will be ensured in material selection, technology and theory. Control pf parameters such as speed, temperature, pressure, force, and friction coefficient to be measured are performed easily through test device; moreover, thanks to electronically sensitivity of electronically and mechanical materials used in test device, it is ensured that you can reach the values you want to reach correctly. Friction tests have been carried out on samples having different properties in auto regulative test device. Friction coefficient values of automotive brake linings in the new system design and manufacturing which is carried out, have been in conformity with SAE-J661 Standard and TSE 555-9076 Standard (Turkish Standards Institution). Test results obtained are in parallel with the literature.

A real-time apple grading system using multicolor space.

Hayrettin Toylan; Hilmi Kuscu

This study was focused on the multicolor space which provides a better specification of the color and size of the apple in an image. In the study, a real-time machine vision system classifying apples into four categories with respect to color and size was designed. In the analysis, different color spaces were used. As a result, 97% identification success for the red fields of the apple was obtained depending on the values of the parameter “a” of CIE L*a*b*color space. Similarly, 94% identification success for the yellow fields was obtained depending on the values of the parameter y of CIE XYZ color space. With the designed system, three kinds of apples (Golden, Starking, and Jonagold) were investigated by classifying them into four groups with respect to two parameters, color and size. Finally, 99% success rate was achieved in the analyses conducted for 595 apples.

Development of Gun Turret Drive Stabilization System with a Microcontroller and Implementation on a Model Tank

Hilmi Kuscu; Salim Songul

Nowadays and in the future, high mobility combat troops will be needed instead of the steady troops in the battlefields. The mobility of troops improves the effect of incursion and prevents troops from becoming an easy target. Mobile gun systems move and vibrate easily because of rough land. Thus, shooting the target and the likelihood of hitting target successfully becomes more difficult for tank gunners. In order to improve the like hood of hitting target and shoot straight, the gun barrel on the turret of a mobile tank has to be stable in the target region.
