Abstract A new bitter phenylpropanoid glucoside, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-(6- O -caffeoyl)-β- D -glucopyranoside and a new bitter tannin-related compound, 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl-β- D -glucopyranoside, have been isolated together with known compounds, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-(6- O -caffeoyl)-β- D -glucopyranoside, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-β- D -glucopyranoside and 6- O -caffeoyl- D -glucopyranose, from the bark of Prunus grayana . The structures of these compounds have been established on the basis of spectroscopic studies and chemical evidence.

Abstract Phenolic glycerides have been isolated from fresh bulbs of Lilium auratum . By spectral and chemical means, they have been identified as the new components, 1,2- O -diferuloylglycerol, a mixture of 1- O -feruloyl-2- O - p -coumaroylglycerol and 1- O - p -coumaroyl-2- O -feruloylglycerol, 1- O -feruloylglycerol and the known compounds, 1,3- O -diferuloylglycerol, 1- O -feruloyl-3- O - p -coumaroylglycerol and 1- O - p -coumaroylglycerol.

Abstract Seven bitter ferulic acid esters of sucrose have been isolated from Lilium speciosum var. rubrum . These compounds were identified as 3,6′-diferuloylsucrose, 4-acetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose, 6-acetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose, 4′-acetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose, 4,6-diacetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose, 6,3′-diacetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose and 4,6,3′-triacetyl-3,6′-diferuloylsucrose on the basis of spectroscopic studies.

Abstract In a chemical examination of the bark ofPrunus grayana, three new phenylpropanoid glucosides, grayanoside A, grayanoside B and grayanin, have been isolated. The structures of these compounds have been established to be 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl-(6-O-feruloyl)-β- D -glucopyranoside, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethyl-(6-O-feruloyD-β- D -gluco and (2R)-[(6-O-caffeoyl)-β- D -glucopyranosyloxy]benzeneacetonitrile, respectively, on the basis of the spectroscopic studies and the chemical evidence.

Abstract Iridoid glucosides, reptoside, 8- O -acetylharpagide, and harpagide, and phenylpropanoid glycosides, verbascoside, desrhamnosylverbascoside, and 2- O -( p -coumaroyl)- d -glucose have been isolated from seven species of Ajuga growing in Japan. No harpagide was originally contained in the living specimens. The iridoid glucoside pattern of each species could be correlated to the stem characteristics of that species.

Abstract The chemical compounds in the bulbs of Lilium aidratum var. platyphyllum and L. tenuifolium have been analysed as part of a systematic study of the genus Lilium . The structures of two new phenylpropanoid glycerol glucosides, regaloside H and I from L. auratum var. platyphyllum , and two new polyhydroxylated steroidal glycosides, tenuifolioside A and B from L. tenuifolium have been elucidated on the basis of the spectroscopic analysis and some chemical transformations.
