Cutaneous Invasion of Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix

We treated a patient with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix with unusual cutaneous manifestation. As this entity is rare, it must be kept in mind when one sees a longstanding fistula of the abdominal wall in the region of an appendectomy scar.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma with bone demineralization.

Two patients with T-cell malignancy having radiographic manifestations of generalized and localized bone demineralization are reported. One, a 53-year-old man, had marked osteoporosis and severe hypercalcemia, but no clinical evidence of leukemia throughout his illness. At autopsy there was no definite evidence of bone involvement. Histologic proof was obtained from abdominal skin which revealed “adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL).” The second case, a 33-year-old man, complained of arthralgia in his hands and feet; radiographs showed severe localized demineralization and pathologic fractures. Specimens of his peripheral blood, cervical lymph nodes, and bone marrow revealed ATLL cells.

Comparison of angiography and computed tomography using new morphologic criteria in staging of renal cell carcinoma

The staging of tumor extension, and regional lymph node and venous involvement by angiography and computed tomography (CT) using new morphologic criteria were compared with the surgical and histopathologic stage in 59 patients (60 cases) with renal cell carcinoma. A high degree of accuracy in staging of both angiography and CT was demonstrated. However, CT was more accurate and sensitive than angiography in the evaluation of tumor extension and regional lymph node involvement, and equally accurate in that of venous involvement. We emphasize that new morphologic criteria of angiography and CT are clinically useful, and CT is the primary approach for the staging of renal cell carcinoma.
