This paper describes a proposal of an extended event model using a media synchronization method for video hypermedia applications. In this extended event model, video and metadata are synchronized by periodically inserting event information in the video multiplex. We considered the following design policies: 1) a model that is independent of the video format and delivery method, 2) the synchronization accuracy can be tuned depending on the purpose and use of the metadata. We designed the extended event model based on the above design policies, and implemented this model as an encode/decode library for Windows Media. Based on this model we developed a video hypermedia system prototype and performed evaluation experiments. The evaluation results of real time synchronization performance of the system prototype showed that in the case of sports video content a synchronization accuracy of 100 msec between video and metadata makes our method effective for use in video hypermedia applications

The Video Signature is a high-performance content fingerprint that detects the same video streams with high accuracy. It can be applied to video recorders in order to reduce data size can by deletion of the same parts. However, it requires a large amount of computations. In the proposed method, using sound features, candidates of commercial messages are extracted. The video identification is done only for candidate segments. The experimental results show 63 % reduction in processing time.

We developed the ARIB-compliant HDTV-PC and used it for experimentation of unified applications by both digital broadcasting and broadband communication. With the rich viewing of HD video and synchronized interactive data services, a HDTV-PC solution is a more compelling one than each of the digital DTV and broadband PC. By combining the rich viewing by HD video and abundant information from the Internet, it was proved that a more useful service was possible than only from each separately. In addition, as a result of these experiments, it became clear that a useful new service was possible.
