The Engineering Science Research II beamline BL14B2 at SPring‐8 is a hard X‐ray bending magnet beamline covering the wide energy range from 3.8 to 72 keV, and has been open to XAFS users since September 2007. The gas distribution and exhaust gas treatment systems have been installed for the in‐situ XAFS measurements. Recent improvements in the speed of XAFS measurements have increased the demand for automated measurements. We have developed such a system, in which the adjustment of X‐ray optics and the XAFS measurement in transmission mode can be performed automatically.

Enhancement in Kinetics of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction on a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Catalyst by Introduction of Iron via Electrochemical Methods

The iron (Fe) electrodeposition-electrochemical dissolution has been employed on nitrogen-doped carbon material (P-PI) prepared via multi-step pyrolysis of a polyimide precursor to achieve the introduction of Fe species, and its influence on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is investigated by cyclic and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry in 0.5 M H2SO4. After the electrochemical treatment, the overpotential and H2O2 production percentage of ORR on the P-PI are decreased and the number of electrons transferred is increased in the meanwhile. In combination with the results of X-ray absorption fine structure spectra, the presence of Fe-Nx sites (Fe ions coordinated by nitrogen) is believed to be responsible for the improved ORR performance. Further kinetic analysis indicates that a two-electron reduction of O2 is predominant on the untreated P-PI with coexistence of a direct four-electron transformation of O2 to H2O, while the introduction of Fe species leads to a larger increase in the rate constant for the four-electron reduction than that for the two-electron process, being in good agreement with the view that Fe-Nx sites are active for four-electron ORR.

Magnetoresistive switch effect in MnSb granular films grown on sulfur-passivated GaAs: more-than 10 000% magnetoresistance effect at room-temperature

Abstract A huge positive magnetoresistance effect, more than 10 000% at room temperature, has been discovered in MnSb granular films. Granular films consisting of nanoscale MnSb dots were fabricated on a sulfur-passivated GaAs (0 0 1) substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy, then covered with an Sb thin layer. The MnSb granular films exhibit a strong in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic-field-sensitive current–voltage characteristics. When a constant voltage, above the threshold value, is applied in the [1 1 0] direction of the GaAs (0 0 1) surface, a steep change in the current, which we term magnetoresistive switch (MRS), is driven by the huge magnetoresistance effect under a relatively low magnetic field (less than about 0.2 T ). On the other hand, less than 1% magnetoresistance effect was observed when the voltage was applied in the [1 1 0] direction of the GaAs surface. The origin of the anisotropy is discussed in terms of the microscopic structural anisotropy at the heterointerface.

In situ high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) was used to systematically evaluate interactions of H2O and O2 adsorbed on Pt and Pt3Co nanoparticle catalysts in different particle sizes. The systematic increase in oxidation due to adsorption of different species (H2O adsorption <O2 adsorption <O2u2009+u2009H2O coadsorption) suggests that cooperative behavior between O2 and H2O adsorptions is responsible for the overpotential induced by hydrated species in fuel cells. From the alloying and particle size effects, it is found that both strength of O2/H2O adsorption and their cooperative effect upon coadsorption are responsible for the specific activity of Pt catalysts.
