The performance of an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is significantly improved by using a coherent detection technique and a fiber amplification technique. Theoretical and experimental studies are presented on the coherent OTDR enhanced with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). The most effective use of the EDFAs in the coherent OTDR is as post-amplifiers. The single way dynamic range (SWDR) has been increased by 13 dB at 1.55 urn over that of a standard OTDR, using a DFB laser diode, laser diode pumped EDFAs and a coherent detector, all suited for integration into a robust and portable instrument. There is still the possibility of further improvement, which could increase the SWDR to 45 dB with a spatial resolution of 100 m.
