Discussion on surface characteristics of stainless steel sheets rolled in cold rolling

In order to clarify the effect of the microscopic surface structure of rolled sheet on its surface gloss, the experiments of cold rolling are made using stainless steel (SUS 430) sheets with two kinds of surface roughness at the entry of rolling and using rolls with four kinds of surface roughness. Then, the factors affecting the surface gloss of rolled sheet and their characteristics are discussed by the analyses with a mirror gloss meter, a two-dimensional roughness meter and an image analysis apparatus. As a result, it has been found that the surface gloss is much affected by the ratio of flat area in the case of surface with less than about 0.1μmRa in roughness and that the surface gloss is apt to be rather affected by the surface roughness than by the ratio of flat area in the case of surface with more than about 0.1μmRa in roughness.
