Actuation using a shape memory alloy (SMA) is considered to be an important technology that will play a leading role in market for next-generation medical devices because an SMA actuator can accurately imitate skillful and delicate hand movements. However, SMA actuators have not been successfully used because of problems in control design caused by the nonlinear hysteresis effect of SMA, which leads to inaccuracies in control systems. In order to overcome the effect, the authors invented a SMA actuator, which could actively and rapidly cool down and heat up, by combining a SMA catheter and a TE module using the Peltier effect. In order to evaluate the TE characteristics of our TE module system, the changes in the temperature with 1) incremental increases in a continuous electric current and 2) the appearance of a discontinuous constant or reverse current are discussed in this paper.

The leading surgical method for correcting the misalignment of the varus and valgus in the knee joint is the high tibial osteotomy (HTO). In the opening wedge HTO (OWHTO), there is no concern about damaging the peroneal nerve on the lateral tibia of the proximal fibula. OWHTO has been the preferred choice, as the opening of the correction angle can be modulated during the operation. The correction of the varus and valgus on the coronal plane are performed adroitly. Nevertheless, there have been numerous reports of unintended changes in the medial tibial plateau and posterior slope angle (PSA). The authors have developed an HTO method using computer-assisted surgery with the aim of addressing the abovementioned problems from an engineers perspective. CT images of the high tibia were reconstructed three-dimensionally, and a virtual osteotomy was performed on a computer. In addition, this study recommends a surgical method that does not cause changes in the PSA after OWHTO. The results of the study are expected to suggest a clear relationship between the anteromedial cortex oblique angle of each patient and the PSA, and an optimal PSA selection method for individuals.

최근 보편화 되고 있는 내측개방형절골술 시에 의도하지 않은 경골후방경사각의 변화로 인한 문제점들이 보고되었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 많은 연구들이 진행되어 왔지만 환자의 다양한 경골의 형상 및 절단면의 기울기에 적용될 수 있는 일반적 해석 모델은 아직 제안되지 못하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 일반적인 케이스에 적용할 수 있는 근위경골절골술의 해석 모델을 제안한다. 이를 위해 내반교정각만을 조정할 수 있는 가상경골축을 정의하고, 이를 통해 절단면과 경골개방축이 내반교정각에 주는 영향을 나타내는 수학적 모델을 제안하고, 기존의 수술적인 변수들간의 상관관계를 명확히 나타내었다. 또한 내반교정각과 경골후방경사각에 추가로, 새로운 각도인 경골뒤틀림각의 존재를 도입함으로써 수술 시 발생하는 모든 기하학적 변수들간의 관계를 완성된 형태로 표현하였다.
