Optical modulation format recognition for polarization-multiplexed coherent system using Chinese restaurant process

Abstract-In digital coherent optical receivers for various polarization-multiplexed high-order modulation formats such as BPSK、QPSK、8PSK and 16QAM signals, we propose and investigate a blind modulation format recognition method using the Chinese Restaurant Process, a kind of Dirichlet model, which is based on the observation of samples in Stokes space. The recognition rates of different number of data points under different optical signal-to-noise ratios (OSNRs) are investigated in detail for four modulation formats. In addition, the recognition characteristics of the proposed method are compared with other format recognition methods in Stokes space. It is shown that the approach has a better performance with higher recognition rates, particularly under a lower OSNR.

Photonic generation of power-efficient UWB pulses adaptable to multiple modulation formats using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator

A simple scheme to generate power-efficient FCC-compliant UWB pulses is proposed by using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM). By adjusting the working parameters of the DD-MZM, a UWB quasi-quadruplet pulse with a spectral power efficiency of 49.2% and a 10-dB bandwidth of 6.22 GHz is obtained via computer simulations. Furthermore, this UWB generator can potentially support multiple modulation formats, including pulse polarity modulation, pulse-position modulation, on-off keying, and pulse-amplitude modulation. Since a single laser source is utilized, the proposed system is tolerant to fiber dispersion, and compatible with existing WDM-PONs.
