Software defined networking and OpenFlow, which allow operators to control the network using software running on a network operating system within an external controller, provide the maximum flexibility for the operator to control a network, and match the carriers preferences given its centralized architecture, simplicity, and manageability. In this paper, we report a field trial of an OpenFlow-based unified control plane (UCP) for multilayer multigranularity optical switching networks, verifying its overall feasibility and efficiency, and quantitatively evaluating the latencies for end-to-end path creation and restoration. To the best of our knowledge, the field trial of an OpenFlow-based UCP for optical networks is a world first.

Field Trial of All-Optical Networking Controlled by Intelligent Control Plane With Assistance of Optical Performance Monitors

Jun Haeng Lee; Hongxiang Guo; Takehiro Tsuritani; Noboru Yoshikane; Tomohiro Otani

A field trial of all-optical networking by an intelligent control plane based on generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) technologies was successfully conducted with the assistance of optical performance monitors (OPMs) capable of monitoring the in-band optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). In the field trial, the GMPLS control plane was applied to not only fast provisioning of all-optical paths but also to end-to-end restoration of optical paths triggered by OPMs. Reliable and stable network operation was achieved as a result of applying the GMPLS control plane and OPMs.

Takehiro Tsuritani; Hongxiang Guo; Jun Haeng Lee; Shuichi Okamoto; Noboru Yoshikane; Tomohiro Otani

A GMPLS-controlled all-optical mesh networking was successfully demonstrated using a path computation-capable network management system (NMS). The developed NMS can manage topology and physical impairments, and create GMPLS-based lightpaths according to path computation results.

An optical switching architecture for intra data center interconnections with ultra-high scalability

Dongxu Zhang; Jian Wu; Hongxiang Guo; Rongqing Hui

We propose an optical switching network architecture called OpenScale. The idea of “small world” topology is employed to construct a flexible and highly scalable network. Simulations verified that proposed architecture can achieve eminent scalability.

Demonstration of GMPLS-controlled inter-domain transparent optical networks

Hongxiang Guo; Takehiro Tsuritani; Shuichi Okamoto; Tomohiro Otani

MPLS extensions such as the wavelength label supporting 3R regenerators and BGP dissemination of wavelength reachability across domain boundaries were proposed. Resilient end-to-end lighpath provisioning was successfully achieved in GMPLS-controlled inter-domain transparent optical networks.

Dongxu Zhang; Xuefei Song; Songtao Mai; Shuang Hao; Hongxiang Guo; Yinben Xia

A hierarchically controlled IP+Optical multilayer Transport SDN architecture is proposed, which highlights flexible resource provisioning and dynamic cross-layer restorations. The proposals are also demonstrated via an implemented testbed prototype.

Peiwei Huang; Hongxiang Guo; Wei Zhang; Takehiro Tsuritani; Jian Wu; Tomohiro Otani

The multi-layer network for the interworking between Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) and Labeled Optical Burst Switching (LOBS) is nowadays attractive for the future IP/DWDM network. In this paper, an effective protocol interface based on overlay model was proposed to enable the transparent transmission of Burst Header Packets (BHPs) and data bursts between OBS domains via a GMPLS network, while maintaining a simple interworking operation between LOBS and GMPLS networks. Moreover, the interface was implemented and evaluated by using a GMPLS/LOBS testbed, and the experimental results verified that it works effectively on the GMPLS/LOBS interconnection networks.

GMPLS inter-domain signaling and routing to control LSPs based on per-domain policy

S. Okamoto; Hongxiang Guo; Tomohiro Otani

GMPLS inter-domain network control was investigated by employing BGP-based inter-domain routing and flexible signaling with loose hop expansion. Per-domain based operational policy was successfully applied to the establishment of GMPLS inter-domain LSPs.
