The Radiographic Appearances of Hyaline Disease of the Lungs in the Newborn

I. Meschan; Horace N. Marvin; Vida H. Gordon; G. Regnier

Hyaline disease of the lungs in the newborn infant has received considerable attention in pediatric and pathologic circles, but a careful search of the radiologic literature has failed to reveal similar studies of a radiographic nature. In the case to be reported here, two successive radiographs of the chest at intervals of several hours were obtained in a newborn infant who died after thirty-two hours. This single case is presented in the hope that the description of the findings will stimulate others to carry out radiographic studies. It is possible (at least theoretically) that we are dealing with rather characteristic changes which, with the clinical findings, may contribute to the objective diagnosis of this condition during life. “Hyaline disease” of the lungs in the newborn infant is characterized by the presence of membranes which, lining the alveolar ducts or alveoli, prevent the proper oxygenation of the blood, so that the infant dies of asphyxia shortly after birth. This membrane has been vario...

Coplatory Reflex by Progesterone and Desoxycorticosterone Acetate.

Horace N. Marvin

Summary Using the elicitation of the copulatory reflex as a criterion, progesterone and desoxycorticosterone acetate were compared. The latter was found to be 13–100% as effective as progesterone over a range of 0.025–1.0 mg. With both substances, the latent period varied inversely as the dose, but duration of responsiveness varied directly with dosage only in the case of desoxycorticosterone acetate.

Theca-cell tumor of ovary in child one year of age: With review of the literature*

Vida H. Gordon; Horace N. Marvin

Summary The literature on theca-cell tumors of the ovary is reviewed. A case of thecoma of the left ovary in a 1-year, 8-day-old female is described. There was a history of white vaginal discharge present shortly before one year of age, and, subsequently, vaginal bleeding occurred. Examination revealed a slightly enlarged uterus in the lower abdomen, an approximately 3×3 cm., freely movable, smooth, hard and nontender tumor mass. Breasts were enlarged to about the size of those of a 12-year-old girl, and pubic hair was present. The labia minora were definitely enlarged and there was redundancy of the hymen. The 17-ketosteroid determination revealed 0.05 mg. per twenty-four hours. The urine collected over a twenty-four-hour period contained the equivalent of 230 I.U. of estrone, an amount well within the range of the normal, adult, cycling female. The tumor tissue was assayed for estrogen and found to contain the equivalent of 2 I.U. per gram of fresh tissue. Preoperative vaginal smears revealed cornified epithelial cells comparable to those of women at the midinterval of the menstrual cycle. Late postoperative vaginal smears showed regression of the vaginal epithelium to the infantile condition. The diagnosis of theca-cell tumor in this case rests on the presence of intracellular and extracellular lipoid droplets containing birefringent granules, and large amounts of reticular fibrils. This is one case which supports the view that an ovarian tumor can produce feminizing characteristics, and contain by far a major portion of theca-cell rather than granulosa-cell element.

Hematological studies on the two-toed sloth, Choloepus didactylus

Horace N. Marvin; Betty R. Shook

Abstract 1. 1. Maximal erythrocyte survival times of 130 and 135 days were obtained using the Cr 51 method. 2. 2. Compared with other mammals, sloths have: higher values for blood urea nitrogen and cholesterol; comparable values for calcium, creatinine, potassium, phosphorus and bicarbonate; and lower values for glucose, chloride, sodium and iodine. 3. 3. Erythrocyte and leucocyte counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin and catalase values are also given.
