Hybrid event recommendation using linked data and user diversity

Houda Khrouf; Raphaël Troncy

An ever increasing number of social services offer thousands of diverse events per day. Users tend to be overwhelmed by the massive amount of information available, especially with limited browsing options perceived in many event web services. To alleviate this information overload, a recommender system becomes a vital component for assisting users selecting relevant events. However, such system faces a number of challenges owed to the the inherent complex nature of an event. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid approach built on top of Semantic Web. On the one hand, we use a content-based system enriched with Linked Data to overcome the data sparsity, a problem induced by the transiency of events. On the other hand, we incorporate a collaborative filtering to involve the social aspect, an influential feature in decision making. This hybrid system is enhanced by the integration of a user diversity model designed to detect user propensity towards specific topics. We show how the hybridization of CB+CF systems and the integration of interest diversity features are important to improve predictions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using precision and recall measures.

EventMedia: a LOD dataset of events illustrated with media

Houda Khrouf; Raphaël Troncy

An ever increasing amount of event-centric generated knowledge is spread over multiple social services, either materi- alized as calendar of past and upcoming events or illustrated by cross-media items. This opens an opportunity to create an infras- tructure unifying event-centered information derived from event directories, media platforms and social networks using the RDF data model. EventMedia aims at creating such an infrastructure that requires seamless aggregation and integration of disparate data sources, some of which overlap in their coverage. In this paper, we present the EventMedia knowledge base composed of events descriptions together with media descriptions associated with these events and interlinked with the larger Linked Open Data cloud. We describe how the data has been extracted, converted, interlinked and published following the best practices of the Semantic Web community.

Parallel faceted browsing

The widely used paradigm of faceted browsing is limited by the fact that only one query and result set are displayed at a time. This demonstrator introduces an interaction design for parallel faceted browsing that makes it easy for a user to construct and view the results of multiple interrelated queries. The paradigm offers general benefits for a variety of application areas.

Mining events connections on the social web: Real-time instance matching and data analysis in EventMedia

Houda Khrouf; Vuk Milicic; Raphaël Troncy

Abstract Event and media services have recently witnessed a rapid growth driving the way people explore information of interest. A significant amount of social calendars, media memes and background knowledge are daily created on various platforms, conveying event clues or past users experience. Mining, in real-time, the connection of these distributed data fragments provides a key advantage not only to deliver enriched views, but also to gain insight into interesting sociological aspects. To this aim, we harness the power of Semantic Web technologies as means to easily steer the data integration and analysis. Our overall goal is to build a web-based environment that allows users to discover meaningful, surprising or entertaining connections between events, media and people. In this paper, we present EventMedia, a platform that provides descriptions of events associated with media, and interlinked with the Linked Data cloud. It draws on a live data update and a real-time interlinking to face the natural dynamics of events. A user-friendly interface has been designed to meet the user needs: relive experiences based on media and support decision making for attending upcoming events.

Confomaton: A Conference Enhancer with Social Media from the Cloud

Houda Khrouf; Ghislain Auguste Atemezing; Thomas Steiner; Giuseppe Rizzo; Raphaël Troncy

A scientific conference is a type of event for which the structured program is generally known in advance. The Semantic Web community has setup a so-called Semantic Web dog food server that exposes structured data about the detailed program of more and more conferences and their sub-events (e.g. sessions). Conferences are also events that trigger a tremendous activity on social media. Participants tweet or post longer status messages, engage in discussion with comments, share slides and other media captured during the conference. This information is spread over multiple platforms forcing the user to monitor many different channels at the same time to fully benefit of the event. In this paper, we present Confomaton, a semantic web application that aggregates and reconciles information such as tweets, slides, photos and videos shared on social media that could potentially be attached to a scientific conference.
