Opacified Silica Reusable Surface Insulation (RSI) for Thermal Protection of the Space Shuttle Orbiter

Howard E. Goldstein; Daniel B. Leiser; Marnell Smith; David A. Stewart

The Space Shuttle Orbiter will be the world’s first reusable space vehicle. Basic to its development is a heat shield that can survive multiple reentries at temperatures to 1400° C. For most of the Orbiter’s surface, a lightweight material was required that had good insulative properties, and could survive temperatures to 1260° C. It would also have to survive large temperature gradients (>1000° C/cm) and severe thermal shock during reentry.
