Nowadays, the authentication methods of physical access control such as key, smart card, and OTP (One Time Password) card require extra hardware, and it is not easy to be aware of if they are lost because of the low using rate. Nowadays, mobile phone is one of the most common used and carry-on device. It would be detected in a shorter time when a mobile phone is lost because it was frequently used in daily time. One of the advantage of OTP is that it is only used once and it is securer compared to the fixed password. QR code is a kind of two-dimension matrix code, which has high encryption and decryption speed; it can not only store large information but also has the error-correction ability. In this paper, we try to develop a safe and efficient authentication way by using mobile phone and implement it for access control system. We take the advantage of one-time usage by using OTP, and store the secret information into QR code. Therefore, the proposed system enhances the security of physical access control systems.

Using RFID guiding systems to enhance user experience

Hsien Tang Lin; Chia Feng Lin; Shyan-Ming Yuan

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to present a guiding system with enhanced functionality based upon radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to promote a user friendly experience.Design/methodology/approach – Based on a user survey, the paper provides a guiding system using RFID with blog platform for further interaction. An example of this technology was built into a gallery at a college in Taiwan.Findings – This guiding system is defined as pull type because users actively pull the relevant information using RFID readers. With such functionalities, users have the opportunity to acquire information, using a mobile device, about a specific object in a context‐aware manner. In addition, users can share ideas and comments related to the object on blogs with others who had visited or will visit the object or site. The user survey results showed that visitors seldom met the artists at an exhibition of their works, but desired to discuss and shares comments with them and other visitors. The pro...

Taking blog as a platform of learning reflective journal

Hsien Tang Lin; Shyan-Ming Yuan

Thinking is as important as learning. It is one of important and effective learning approaches by recording and reflecting student’s own learning attitude and learning performance and referring to others’ learning portfolio daily. Although many of students know this approach, but seldom of them put this approach into action owing to the problem of preserving content of reflection and learning portfolio. In this paper, a networked learning reflection mechanism based on blog service is presented. Students can make their learning reflection and view others’ with ease. An experiment was conducted at an Institute of Technology upon system completion. The experimental results show that there is a positive correlation between students’ learning performance and attitude of learning reflection. It reveals that students who have better learning performance tend to make more reflection on their learning. More than 80% of students express this mechanism has positive affection on their learning.

A System Implementation of Pushing Advertisement to Handheld Devices via Bluetooth

Y. H. Chen; Hung-Jen Chou; Chen-Pu Lin; Hsien Tang Lin; Shyan-Ming Yuan

Almost everyone today has his or her mobile phone and Bluetooth has already become a standard inclusion on most mobile phones, laptops and PDAs. Data transfer through Bluetooth among the handheld devices is common and popular. Bluetooth establishes links in a more convenient manner to facilitate sharing data between devices. It motivates us to apply this technology to hypermarket advertising. In this paper, we present a framework that pushes advertisements to hypermarket customers with handheld devices via Bluetooth. We have implemented the system and completed the field test in a local superstore. The result was satisfied. Hypermarket can reduce the cost of distributing handbills by using this proactive advertising system which also provides dynamic delivering of advertisement. In other words, hypermarket can make and deliver advertisement on the fly without resort to printing it.

CloudEdge: a content delivery system for storage service in cloud environment

Chi Huang Chiu; Hsien Tang Lin; Shyan-Ming Yuan

With the trend of cloud computing, more and more web applications move their content to external storage services to reduce the cost of hardware and maintenance. In this paper, a novel architecture called CloudEdge for Content Delivery Network (CDN) with the storage service in cloud computing is introduced. This architecture could not only keep the loosely coupled integration between storage service and web applications but also provide better content manipulation features such as edge network content delivery, caching, secured access control, the variations of content objects generated on demand, and post-process on content objects.

The construction of Web-based portfolio system

Hsien Tang Lin; Shyan-Ming Yuan; Zhi Feng Liu

Portfolio-assessment refers to a process that involves the targeted collection of a students work and the utilization of this piecemeal record to illustrate how hard a student works and the process by which said student grows and matures. A successful portfolio requires students themselves, instructors, and peer spend considerable effort to participate activity. To facilitate portfolio process, a Web-based portfolio system WebPor based on the concept of portfolio- and peer-assessment is presented in this paper. WebPor consists of a Web-based peer-assessment segment called NetPea, a learning by discussion segment, and a Web storage facility. The developed system has been implemented at an Institute of Technology in Taiwan, the result shows it achieves effectiveness significantly.
